I have a 98 K3500 with the 7.4L. I'm using an AC-Delco PF1218 E-core filter on it. The E-core version is the only one I can find in AC-Delco anymore.

Since I started using this filter right after I bought the truck 2 1/2 years ago, I'm getting more engine tapping at startup. Kind of like when I used Fram filters years ago. I don't know remember the brand of filter it had on it when I first bought it but it didn't have the startup tapping noise like it does now. I've only put about 7,000 miles on the truck since I bought it.

Has anyone else experienced more engine startup noise while using this filter specifically and the E-cores in general?

I bought a couple of Purolator Pure one filters to use when this oil change is up. Thanks for any info.

How many times have you changed the filter? If you have done several oil and filter changes and the tapping continues, yes it is time to try a different filter or oil. Even if you haven't changed the oil and filter, since you already bought a different filter, may as well use it. However, if the tapping goes away on the first oil change in a long time, it may be more proof of needing an oil change than a bad filter.

Another thing. If you have had the same nitrile ADBV for 2 1/2 years, that may be beyond its life. Nothing last forever.

I hope the oil and filter has been changed before in 2-1/2 years.

I've changed the oil three times since I've had it and I have about 2,000 miles on this oil and filter so its not from leaving it on too long. I also drive the truck at least once a week so it usually doesn't sit real long before its driven. I replaced the valve cover gaskets last year and it was very clean under the covers so I doubt its from lack of oil changes. The truck has 101,900 miles on it. Thanks.

As I said, in my first post, in that case, it may be time try something different, logically the filter you already have.

The morning after switching from the fram that came on my caprice when I bought it to the Supertech ST5(same ecore style) I noticed a very loud tick, more like a knock. Has done it every morning since, but goes away once the vehicle is warm.

My used oil analysis with this filter and Rotella T Synthetic 5w40(650mi, didn't change oil or filter) should be in tomorrow so i'll see if it's causing excessive wear.

Mine goes away also when warm but I don't like the sound of it. I thought I read that some people were having these startup noises with the Ecore filters.

Since Wix is more expensive than AC, I would hope they are better.

I'm not sure which autoparts stores around here sell Wix anymore. They are not out on the shelfs but they may be in the back. The Pureones look like a pretty good filter and the application for this truck is quite a bit longer than the AC-Delco one.

ur looking at a few bucks,, for better quality made filter,or NAPA gold,CarQuest red.

I like wix filters, but I can get the ST or AcDelco for my application 5 bucks cheaper. For conventional changes it is not worth paying some more for a sil adbv. Extended (over 7500) sure I would upgrade to a napa gold or fram extended.
