I was in the local Chevy dealership today and they had stacked around the waiting room many of the 1 litre bottles of the AC Delco dexos1 synthetic blend, interspersed with Castrol SLX Professional. I snapped a pic of the front and back of the Delco bottle. I asked about the price and no one knew as it wasn't yet in the system.

However the parts guy encouraged me to instead buy the Castrol SLX Professional 4718.

I pointed out to him that for sure this Castrol oil was a quality oil but not dexos1 certified and so techically could not be used in MYs 2011 and beyond. He disputed this claim.

[Did we always know that any dexos1 oil "superseded" the 4718M rating? See below:]

That was the idea for Dexos to eliminate all the other various specs GM4718, GM6094, their euro spec etc and have just one world wide spec. GM is saying you can use API SN in most '11 models for now if Dexos is "not" available and GM4718 for cars that are turbocharged, supercharged or the 'vette.

Does anyone know if this oil is avaliable here in the US yet? If so is it a dealer only part or avaliable elsewhere? I would love to get hold of some for the Trailblazer.

If they'd sell that oil in 5 quart bottles for about the same price as the Motorcraft semi-syn I'd be all over it

Any brand name synthetic oil surpasses Dexos specs.
I'd bet good money that most quality blends do as well.

Dexos is a synthetic blend; better than conventional oil, but little more than an average quality blend.

Which is why I am a bit surprised that this AC Delco blend implicitly possesses the 4718M rating.

Keep in mind that the subject AC Delco oil does not meet GM4718M. Read the label carefully. The oil producer is suggesting it's suitable for use in applications that require GM4718M.

Many oil producers have used similar language in the past, and the use of such potentially confusing statements has been discussed here before. In the case of GM4718M, this might be the first case of any oil other than a "full synthetic" being recommended for use where a GM4718M oil is required.

I'd bet a large amount that that oil is a Petro-Canada made, syn-blend 5w30.

Their 'conventional' oil is already a group II/III blend, so this oil will be very close to PC Supreme 5w30, IF you want to see the specs.....

You might be right, but can you point to any evidence of its comparative quality? Your statement seems to indicate that you know something about the make up of this oil. Do you?

No hard evidence. used oil analysis may, in a few months, tell the tale.

As it is, most all 'OEM' oil is mediocre stuff. Be it GM, H-D, Honda, etc., it's all low bid, JUST meets mfg minimum specs..

At least in Canada it is only available in 1 litre bottles and is priced at $5.95 per litre bottle.

Interesting. So, you consider Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend, or Honda 0w-20, for example, mediocre? I always considered them "above average".

+1 Most oem products including their oils are top notch and above average quality as compared to aftermarket parts at least in my experience they have been.

I was speaking generally, and those two products are exceptions. The general conventional oil offered by most MFG's are good, not great products.
Auto dealers use 55 gal drums of commercial grade lubricants. SOME have better products available.
Chevy/GM dealers have Mobil 1 on hand for the Corvettes, certain Caddilac models and so forth.
Harley conventional oil is a Citgo product, and Honda conventional oil is also a from a small blender. They are nothing special.

CP is not a small blender.

Other then being a syn/blend oil, is Dexos1 anything special?
Are there oils on store shelves that also meet Dexos1?
I can assume that Dexos1 is for DI engines?

GM specs Dexos for all their engines for 2011. It's likely more relevant for the DI engines though.

Most any brand name synthetic oil is better than Dexos. As it's a blend, some quality blends on store shelves would be equal or better than Dexos specs as well.

So now I'm confused. Has dexos1 supplanted GM4718M?
Or will the Full Synthetic oils like M1 continue to carry the 4718M designation?
