Unless it fails, I had one that failed the leaf spring let go The element bypassed the oil and the filtering ability was not much better than no filter at all. Change filters with the oil.

Agree, and OP also mentioned Amsoil, which is at least 15k, and up to 25k/one year depending on which one the vehicle uses.

A bypass setup would also extend the amount of time between filter changes.

He finds the filter location to be a pain in the [censored] to the deal with, and the spillage ends up dripping from various points around the truck. It is a well known complaint around the Ford forums. There are several companies making relocation kits for them. Getting 2 -3 changes from one filter is a nice compromise.

Typically, you buy a can of brake cleaner for oil changes like that. That's how we dealt with messy oil changes at the dealership - just hose down the undercarriage with brake cleaner into the drain plan. It prevented come backs because 1 oil drop onto someone's driveway or garage was a call to the service manager to complain.

Sounds like a way to make him hate it even more lol. Laying on his back in the driveway, blasting brakekleen all over, wind direction changes.

Just think of it as "free rust treatment"! I think Ford ran out of "better ideas" in the late '70s/early '80s, myself.
