02 Camry Mentioned earlier that brakes are a bit spongy but yesterday I had to break hard and the abs shutter came on. I didn't break that hard but is that they way it is suppose to work? I have never felt the abs unless it was the winter/slippery conditions?

what version of Camry you have, coop? is it LE? or?

wifey has a 04 camry LE and I'm not aware of standard ABS set up within....

(*even though the instrument cluster came with that light, but never comes on during the "on" mode, also no signs of an ABS setup under the hood*)

*curious*

What kind of tires do you have? Good ones? Cheap ones? Old or new?

Ill bet you broke traction and ABS sensed it. Normal for some situations!

02 LE Does it not have ABS? I don't even know, just figured that shutter when I put on the brakes was it. Again, just felt it in the winter but then the other day.

New tires on the front.

Warped Rotors. Camrys are good cars but the front brakes on the I 4 are a bit "undersized". Easy to upgrade the fronts to the bigger V 6 brakes, a bolt on.

unless yours is the XLE series (which the high-trim does come with optional ABS).

Also: LE trim does come with a slightly smaller diameter brake rotor, and with that came with somewhat reduced thermal capacity, which makes the rotors warp relatively easy.

Owing to the fact that buying Chinese new rotor blanks are considerably cheaper (35% less) than re-surfacing the used ones, I opt to have my wifey's rotors replaced whenever I feel the warping...or every other pad change.

Cheap tires and a slick road could have caused the ABS to kick on. Roads can be slick as ice even in the dry if the humidity and temperature are correct.

All it takes is a bit of sand on the road or one tire dropping off the edge of a pothole and you'll feel the ABS properly engage.

I did not realize Camry LE even came without ABS :-( Toyota must have started to de-content the car in latter generation. The 4th generation (97-01) ABS was standard on at least LE model.
