Yes, I am in an argumentative mood because of a recent Microsoft .NET Framework update that has hosed my machine and many others, and Microsoft is clueless as to how to fix it. My apologies. I freakin hate Microsoft sometimes...

hmm... read a few reviews on Cnet about SAS (by USERS; Cnet itself didn't even review SAS...wonder why), and some of them kinda sucked...but I'm sure Drew and sprintman know something good about it...why are so many people saying that it "leaves stuff behind" when you get rid of it?
can you enlighten me a bit?
i'm still using spybot, SWB, Adaware 2007(new), and would like to jump to SAS, but need a bit of encouragement.
thanks.

Leaves things behind? It uninstalls fine. Pretty much all programs leave useless registry entires behind along with a folder in the program files. No biggie, that's why you run CCleaner and delete left over files.

Try uninstalling Norton Internet Security if you want to see a program that leaves things behind. Holy crapola!

Another sweet option is the free version of Spyware Doctor in google pack; it has file guard real time monitoring for free.

I deleted Spybot a long time ago, it's a waste of space. Also I work with 2,400 ITC people with revenues this year of some [censored]1.2B. We get to see/test everything out there. Our clients expects us to 'get it right'...s

Likewise Sprintman. I had Spybot about 3 minutes on my machine last year and for some reason the tea timer completely hosed my machine and I had to reinstall my operating system (thank goodness for imaging software I have now!!!). It will never see my computer ever again.

97tbird, I really recommend having something running in real time. The only free things I know of that have free real time protection are spyware terminator, and the google pack version of spyware doctor. I have the free spyware doctor and it seems to be working fine; startup is slower but that has been a known fault of spyware doctor for some time. It does scan really really fast with the intelligent scan; like 2 minutes! Excellent IMO.

Spyware terminator is supposed to be pretty decent; not quite the same detection rates as the biggies, but it also has HIPS with it for zero day protection.

There are other free HIPS programs like Dynamic Security Agent and Prevx2, but after using HIPS now for a year, I'm done with it. Every new little thing that legitimately needs to be on your machine, like windows updates, will throw up a bonanza of pop ups similar to a firewall, and twice now, I've had windows updates corruptly install and mess things up because of HIPS.

One other thing; A-Squared has the best online scanner I've seen, so you can use that instead of having to install yet another security scanner. The A-Squared online scanner even installs a quarantine on your machine so if it finds something, it quarantines it first before removal so you don't end up with the scanner deleting something non-malacious and screwing up your system. That's the biggest fault with online scanners.
