A quiet oil

I have a 1994 T-Bird with a 4.6 and the owner's manual calls for 5W30, but Ford "retroed" the oil spec to 5W20 in 2001. My big old Ford shop manual says the engine calls for 10W30 (it was printed six months prior to my owner's manual). Guess what oil is going in next change? 10W30. I agree wholeheartedly with Merkava. 5W30 or 10W30 won't hurt anything. It will definitely quiet down an engine that is currently using 5W20. How much will it quiet down? That's hard to say. Maybe a little...maybe a lot. The point is, it won't hurt the engine by trying it.

Pablo, would you tell us why you would not use xW-20 oil in a car spec'd for it? I would really like your opinion on this, as my 2007 Yaris seems to sound louder with the x0-20 stuff over the 5W-30 stuff...and do you think more engine noise means more wear?

Big surprise

Indeed - I didn't say that!

A XW-30 won't hurt anything, but first I was staying within the parameters of the problem (XW-20). An XW-30 may quiet certain engines. I don't and won't and probably never will recommend some large scale migration to XW-30 in XW-20 engines. It makes no sense from a wear standpoint!!

Amsoil sales are doing so well they had to expand their facilities.

Off topic here, but the guy at the local distribution center told me that this year business is up 30%, and the year before it was up 15%.

Is this the current chain driven cam engine, or the earlier belt driven one?
We have a 2.4 belt driven VTEC, and a 2.2 no VTEC.
The 2.4 is on GC, and is quieter than with a 5W-30. Honda allows up to a 10W-30 for this engine, above 20 degrees F.
The 2.2 is doing a short run on 10W-40, mainly because I had the oil, and need to use it for something. It is really quiet with this brew.
I don't think a little heavier oil will hurt your Honda, and it will quiet it down.

I'm using GC (0W30 Castrol Syntec) in my BMW 740 and my Ford Explorer. The BMW engine has always had a quiet refined sound so I don't notice a big difference--maybe a touch smoother. In the Ford with its SOHC engine the GC made a noticeable difference. Definitely quieter. 5W30 recommended...runs great on the 0W30.

Mine is the chain drive cam.i think this engine is specked for 5w-30 outside the US. Is this true?
