A quiet oil

Depends on how noisy the motor is, and why the motor is noisy. Going to a thicker oil may help a little (valve train noises etc.).

Thicker is usually quieter.
You may have compromises with a little less fuel mileage [note = little].
Mobil One is a fine oil, but for the same viscosities has sometimes shown itself to be a noisy oil.

It's not unusual to have noise with 5W-20. What kind of car is this?

In most cases, a car speced for 5W-20 can safely run on 5W-30 or 10W-30 and have great success with quiet operation.

10W-30 is not a thick oil.

many imports now run exotic cam systems with high moving parts counts and long flopping drive chains. the VVT-I systems can be noisy at high rpm high horsepower output mode when the cams are cranked to the max lift and advance.

what engine and mileage?

If my car was speced for 5W-20, I would not run it. That's just my own personnel opinion and I don't expect anyone else to agree.

I met this Amsoil salesman in San An while I was commuting for a job and was doing an oil change. Well I was at a WM because I had a change due and this Amsoil guys comes up to me talking about doing an Amsoil change and how it would cost 80 bucks and I said, "You must think I'm crazy if I'm gonna spend 80 bucks on a change" but not in so many words..ok, it was those words because I was there contemplating my first attempt at low-cost MC as an oil for my Cord. He got real mad and wanted to pick a fight with me "outside" and it was him who imposed and butted in to a conversation I was having with a sales guy about using MC after months of reading online and researching both here and elsewhere.

So I bet Pablo is the same way..

In reality - completely the opposite. I mean I have talked to people about oil, (never at WM) but never once even just walked up out of the blue, or argued or anything of the sort. (I believe he was referring to the password "event")

Amsoil's business must be down if their salesmen have to head hunt customers now at the local WM

I had a similar experience buying synthetic off a local retailer rack. the amsoil salesman was stocking and just had to butt in and tell me the Mobil 1 I was buying was junk oil so I moved to the next aisle and the butt followed

You see, this is why I think Pablo is a stand up guy. He even mentions Redline in his response. Well done sir, well done.

Pablo is the go - to guy for all things oil. I once PM'd him with a problem and he suggested Kama Sutra oil.

Woo....eeeee! Now I'm a "stand up" guy all the time too!

Thanks Pabs.
