A Little Wrench Porn

I've still got my Hazet spanners, and Hazet 1/2 drive, all still good...well 2 ratchets and the powerbar are toast, and a couple of sockets too. 40 years of a tough life, casualties happen. I have Stahwille too, they are thin, which is sometimes good, but can hurt your hands if you have to lean on them hard. I have tools made all over the world, they don't stay with me long if they are not up to the task. Although I can get attached junk sometimes, everything deserves a chance.

Oh no. Hazet tool kit wrenches fit into a nested keeper let into the inside of the trunk lid. In Bugs they came in the roll with the lug/plug socket and screw driver. The wrenches are thin but built up where necessary. Very resistant to spreading when leaned on. Not cheap either. Price a toolkit for an '87 535i

Hi Trav,

Where do you buy the Hazet wrenches? Do you buy them in Germany?

I am on the lookout for nice wrenches as an alternative to Snap On. I am trying to stay away from junky hand tools.

I haven't figured out where to buy good tools other than the Matco, Mac and SnapOn trucks. Is there an online store that sells high quality tools at lower prices than the tool trucks?
I am a hobbyist that is currently looking for a set of SAE and metric stubby wrenches and high quality screwdrivers. My Craftsman screwdrivers just aren't cutting it...

I am tired of chewing up nice aviation hardware while working on aircraft with lower grade tools.

Your mentioned that you bought the Hazet wrench set cheaper than the set in the Amazon link from Pajero, I think?

I find your posts very helpful by the way.

Thanks!

JensPutzier.com and amazon.de both have good prices on Hazet & Stahlwille tools. Maybe not as good as you'll find at a tool shop in Germany, but the prices are much better than any US-based Hazet or Stahlwille source.

AFAIK, Mr Trav goes to Germany quite a bit.. Lots of good options once you are there.

For sourcing you can also search for TBS Aachen - tbs-aachen.de, they have decent pricing along with Amazon.de plus Prime for better shipping (at least for a month)

For wrenches you can also look at Wright Tools, I also prefer 'satin' finish of the WrightGrip wrenches to the cheap optimism of the bling that Snap-on is so proud of.
A lot of quality tools that are still made in USA, just across different brands.

You should also look at Ko-ken, KTC, Nepros - all from Japan.

Depends on your budget frankbee3...

Wrenches (prefer US/German): Snap-On flank-drive/plus, Hazet 600N, Stahlwille and Wright Grip

Screwdrivers (prefer US/German/Swiss): Wera, Wiha, PB Swiss, Proto Duratek, Snap-On, Vessel (for JIS)

Ratchets: Snap-On Dual80 and Nepros

Koken and KTC have really nice and unique items as well. Check out frankstools.com for premium Japanese tools. Koken, check out their extensions, zeal universals, spark plug sockets, and sockets. KTC has nice double box-end wrenches, low-profile drive adapters.

You can get some of them on Amazon.de at a good price and they will ship them to the USA, they also remove the sales tax so you end up with about the same price you see in US $$ inc shipping.
I bought these from Hoffman while I was there.

This is the set, just order it.

Trav, what's your opinion of the Gedore (made-in-Germany, not India) wrenches and sockets?
German Made Gedore is the old Dowidat which were always very good, get their premium line and you get some nice high quality tools.

Not at all, try swinging a large 6 point to the next wrench flat in a confined space like a lot of line fittings are, 12 points are worth their weight in gold in such situations.
Oh ok I haven’t ever run into that situation. It’s good to know the jaws on those don’t spread though. Most of mine have.
