some of you may frown on this practice but it really does work. my grandmother is 96 years old and was born/raised on a farm in the countryside on the island of maui. there were few stores like todays island and the family was forced to make due with what little they had. they used old motor oil for preserving wood. it was painted on 2x4's or whatever and it repelled termites and rotting. over the years she has used this practice religiously when building things out of wood in the outdoor environment. like i said she is 96 right now and is very active in her little backyard garden with garden boxes and plant shelves(up the ying yang) and the wonderfull aroma of used oil.

my grandmother was the same way. very active in the yard in her old age. i have a memory of her using used motor oil to soak an old tree stump for months. then finally making a fire around the stump and butning it out. when the fire was done the stump would be burned a foot below ground level.

Grandad used to pour the oil over blackberries (noxious weeds down here) and burn them.

Next year, the grass on the Zn, Ca, P, rich soil patch was astounding.

sulfated ash roolz ??

We used to keep a small container of used oil aside for the horse people - they painted the horses hooves with it.Also used to give it to the guys who made septic tanks....they painted the wooden shutters with it when they cast the tanks inground.

My dad always saved used oil for his brothers farm. Plows, planter wheels and shoes, disks, cultivator shoes, anything that was scoured by the soil was coated with used oil when put up for the season. Stuff would stay rust free for many months. Dad said used oil lasted much longer then new oil or grease and was easier to apply.

I have used used motor oil to paint the bottom of the wood in the shaded areas of my house, the house is dark brown and you cant see it, it keeps any bugs and fungus at bay. This is no lie, but when I was a kid, we would have lots of used oil from the trucks and would spread it out on the dirt road leading to the garage to keep dust down, 55 gallons at a time. The township used to use oil to keep dust down to at the fairgrounds. No enviromental issues arose from all this used oil being spread by the way.

Ive seen used used motor oil used for the mange, worked perfectly. My grandpa also keeps some around and has it in a little oiling can. Puts it on bolts and nuts when their rusted and lets it sit.

The issue at Times Beach was not the waste oil used to keep dust down, but the noxious additives that the unscrupulous contractor that used it to hide the disposal of toxic wastes (dioxin, PCBs, etc.)

I used to use it as a weed killer spray and to keep the ditch from washing out so quickly.
