A leaky Motomaster oil filter?

Last Saturday during a busy afternoon, a driver pulled up in our shop saying that his 2010 Hyundai Elantra was leaking oil one after he had his oil change done in Canadian Tire. After we brought the vehicle over, I examined the oil filter (a red Motomaster oil filter) and the drain plug. The drain plug is dry and didn't leak, but the oil filter was a different story.
Although I tightened up the oil filter by hand, it leaked between the base plate and the filter housing, even though the gasket's seal is tight. When I took it off, the filter spindle was fine and the mounting plate was clean. Then, I installed a Pennzoil PZ-37 oil filter, and inspected again. The engine no longer leaks oil and he sent the defective filter to where he had his oil change last week.
So, guys, I was wondering, whenever you use a red Motomaster oil filter recently on your oil change, did it start to leak oil from underneath every time you start the engine?

Do you know what size the filter was? I went to Canadian Tire last week to but a Fram XG filter for my car and the shelves were bare of my size XG3614. I asked the sales guy what happened to all of the XGs in my size and he stated that Fram had a recall on all 3614 filters and some other sizes for leaky base plates. This would include the motomaster filter since they are made by Fram.

I'm pretty sure that if every Motomaster filter leaked you would have heard about it before. Sure they may not be the best quality but these and Frams are not failing at every corner. As busy as my son has been since he started at CT, there would be a lot of cars sitting around if all of their filters failed!

Out of curiosity, is this the little tiny filter? About 2"x2"? Went into his shop the other day and saw a couple of these in their drain pans....very funny, never seen one this small!

I have the exact same problem in my Tribute, only not just with a MM filter.

After about 5k on an OC, my filter 'works itself loose', and starts driping a bit of oil. Filter is still on fairly tight, just not as tight as it sould be.

It's done it witgh a NAPA Proselect, and then with a MM filter.

The Motomaster oil filter I took out was a 017-1707-6/MPH3387A. It's pretty rare to see a spin-on oil leaked through the seam, even though the gasket was sealed tight on the mounting plate.

I've only seen that once, a lot of years ago, and I don't remember the brand. I tend to stay away from Canadian Tire filters. They switch their suppliers all the time, so one has difficulty keeping track of what one's getting. Their pricing isn't that competitive, either.

For a little while, they were Purolators, which would have inspired more confidence in me. I know they've switched again, but not sure if it's back to Honeywell or to a Chinese supplier.

If Motomaster oil filters are manufactured by FRAM, this leak might have something to do with FRAM's recent recall.

I believe that was a different part number.

Are you sure you took that filter off? That filter has M18x1.5 threads with no internal bypass valve, and is primarily used on GM engines.

The PZ-37 filter that you put on seems like the correct one, the equivalent of PH3593a/51334 with M20x1.5 threads, and internal bypass valve.
