I rarely use the AC, but I'll shut it of several blocks away, or run the engine a bit afterwards holding the rpms about 1-1.5k on a really hot day just to blow a lot of the hot air away from the condenser/radiator so it doesn't just linger under the hood and to keep the underhood temps down.

Yes! Good practice to shut down everything before killing the engine.
I had a friend in college that came back to his Ford Escort at the mall after parking it and it had burned to a crisp thanx to a short in the wiring in the heater controls. He left the heat on when he killed the engine.
Of course, this is a rare thing and I believe there was even a recall for, but still.... better safe than sorry I always say.

Other than w/s wipers, likely whatever was operating when last driven is going to be on when restarted...
If you live in a high humidity area you'll never begin to dry the evaporator in five minutes, try more like 15-20min... I've never worried about such trivial stuff...

I'm still in the habit of turning everything off - old habits die hard. I do switch from recirculate back to fresh, but don't do it before pulling into the garage. I do it a few seconds before shutting the car off to allow the mixer flap to open up - even assuming that this car is like my last one. All you need to do is leave it set to allow some outside air into the evaporator housing to minimize mildew growth.

as all ways we got great ideas and info from our friends. i turn every thing off be for turning the engine off, so when i start it the next time so i know what noises to expect to hear.

I do occasionally see someone driving around here with the windows down in the summer, but VERY rarely. My belief is that without A/C, Texas would still be a very podunk place.

If I lived down south, I would be capable of unspeakable things in order to have a working a/c in my car, hehe.
I spend my summer in Upstate NY working at a spoiled rich kid camp.
Up there, you can get away with no a/c, plus I also rarely use the car during this time. This is why I decided not to spend the $$$ fixing the a/c in my Ciera when the compressor took a dump 2 weeks ago.
As far as all of these tricks about shutting off the a/c to let the condenser cool or accumulator dry.... that's all news to me.

Interestingly there is some coding that can be done on the German cars to turn off the AC and all exterior lights before the car is started.
I don't bother turning off a/c a little before stopping, but I do not leave a/c on max closing off outside air circulation while driving and always try to circulate air into cabin from outside or my car will build up a mildew odor. I only close system to prevent outside air circulating in car if I'm next to something stinky outside like a cigar smoking convention or an overfilled landfill.
