Love the nice data but 2002? That's a bit dated, I bet we're more efficient these days.
And I could not determine if they took into account the outrageous electrical requirements for AC use, especially on high settings. My car in my sig runs 2 huge fans on the condenser and 1 massively powerful inside fan. That's a lot of power that the alternator must supply.
Most of our newer cars never get the "stink" you refer to despite being operated exactly as you describe, so I assume that is less relevant due to designed changes. All our various platforms cycle the compressor a lot and use an orifice tube setup to control the cycling.
