you read my mind

You attribute too much worth (or lack of worth) to the residual oil in the filter.

That Fram commercial must have had some subliminal message in it.

prehaps youre right, dont recall the fram commerical, ill forget what grandpa said, and not take the risk by doing the logical thing

There were those who just changed their oil. The retail parts market wasn't nearly as developed as it is now. I don't even recall filters being a big item in the Kmarts. AA didn't exist, AZ didn't exist, and I don't even think Big A or Napa existed yet.

The Fram commercial was part of their "pay me now, or pay me later" ad campaign. It showed a service station owner with a car being brought in on a wrecker.

One of the statements was "You know if you don't change your filter you leave up to a quart of dirty oil in your engine". An absolutely true statement.

Naturally it was also a time where a 3000 miles oil change was too long, you had chokes and carb's and more insolubles and fuel wash, lousy multivisc oils ....etc..etc.

There was a time in America (Depression and WWII) when farmers conserved their resources by draining the oil from the farm tractor and filling the family truck or car to drive to town to shop or go to their second job as a school teacher. When they got home, they would put the oil back in the tractor. I learned this from 3rd generation farmers back in South Dakota last fall. I didn't ask about the oil filters being changed, but it's probably safe to say that they re-used them if the equipment had them.

INDYMAC, Grandad used to have a foot locker full of used spark plugs, just in case something (like the depression) came along again, and his saved ones were better than the ones in his truck.

Parents r16 called for 5,000KM oci, and 10k filer changes. Thats what I did.

Now that using synths, it's 10k for both.

age 42.

BTW, I pulled apart some of those renault filters back in the day, and they were extremely robust pressed steel, even pleats etc. like they were designed to go the distance.

Sorry. Would take more than 2 seconds to explain. Just trying to stay on-topic.

i change my oil filters ever other oil change not to be cheap but i believe when you replace an oil filter the first start up you run the engine dry for a second or two..I have had this topic discussed at an engine rebuilding seminar and most agree with me you can hear the differance 44

Im 27

I just reused my first oil filter. I was running GC for 3k miles on an oversized K&N filter(FL1A size compared to the FL400S size). I now put in some Mobil 1 0w-40 but reused the filter. Some people run a lot longer OCI's so I don't really see any harm in it, its a pretty decent, huge filter as well.

After another 3k I will switch it to 0w-40 M1 again and a Mobil1 filter in the fl1a size
