Hello all, first off thanks for a great site. Been a long time oil freak too!

I have a 99 ram 1500 5.9L. 125000 miles. Before i owned it, the previous owner, my friend, said he got work done to it (valve seals?) because of oil consumption of about 1 qt. a week. Now after repairs it still drinks about 1 qt every 3K miles. Sometimes more. It has almost always been low on oil and it towed and worked before i had it. Always got cheap oil and filters from quick lube places with unknown OCIs.
I would like to know if i should go with Mobil 1 High Mileage or Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend Both in 10w30. Would like to run Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic but CANNOT find it locally. thanks.

Maxlife Blend is a great oil, and will do really good.

Coming into spring/summer, I'd try the 10W-40 grade.

1 qt every 3k miles is not surprising: first, its not an extremely close tolerance engine second: its service history is dubious. good this is that the Magnum engines can be very very durable, as long as the oil pickup screen doesn't clog with sludge
