here's a UOA with the cheapo wally world full synthetic. granted it was only a 3k sample, but I'm happy with the results. BTW - I did NOT change the oil at this sample.

my only concern is with the insolubles - which seem high for only a 3k sample. what is this insoluble stuff?

let me know what you think.....

If this is the stuff that comes in the big 5qt jug it can't be A3 rated like on the back of the jug.Look at the low 30W viscosity.

BTW,nice report.I wouldn't worry about the insoluables as it didn't seem to hurt anything at all.

a couple more comments:
1) I ran a bottle of techron through the tank about 1k miles into the interval.
2) I drive about 50/50 traffic jams/open Hwy.
3) I use OEM Nissan oil filters (the 9E000 type)
4) this is the first OCI on synthetic oil.

yes, this was the big $11 5qt jug. would you call this shearing?? I may switch to GC for a higher 30W vis.

thanks for the comments.

There was NOTHING wrong in this report, and the ST syn held up very well - an honest Group III, ACEA A3 rated synthetic at an honest price. The "elevated" insolubles could just as easily be explained as leftovers from the last oil (whatever it was and however long it was in service). You pulled your sample at about the point the oil's viscosity would be expected to have decreased to its minimum in use. Another 2,000 miles would likely have shown a higher viscosity. Unless outright engine problems are suspected, I've always felt that checking a particular oil's UOA performance shouldn't be done until at least one prior fill with that oil has already been completed and the subsequent fill then checked at the conclusion of its run. By that time, whatever influence on the final findings from the previous type oil will be minimized.

At 60.4 SUS, which is 10.4 cSt, this SuperTech oil, after 3K miles, is in really good shape viscosity wise.

Nice engine and nice report!

interesting brew - please do a UOA so we can see how well it worked.

Wear and tbn looks good! I was just suprised to see the low amount of 'other stuff' in the oil. Nothing personal against the oil, I'm using it myself, in fact I have about 3 jugs of it! I plan on running 5K mile OCIs in my Accent. Although I added a few ounces each of the VSOT and Redline 10w-30, makes me feel better.

Is this another example that it doen't really matter what oil is used? I'm sure that most high dollar oil is excellent. But the queston is, does it matter?

It's right on the money.

From the MSDS :
Viscosity Grade 10W-30
@40*c cSt 63.4
@100*c cSt 10.3

It's about the best oil report i've seen for this engine type. I think the thickness and viscosity suits the engine perfectly(don't add anything that would make the oil thicker).

Folks have gotten so obsessive compulsive on this website they figure cheap is bad, expensive is good, and hunches and feelings have as much credibility as the lab analyses. When the oil analysis comes out in favor of Super Tech full synthetic being real good, they say, "can't be, the lab tech must have been drunk while he did the testing". Peoples' ears apparently get so sensitive they can tell Centistokes in 0.1 increments. This is balderdash.

With all due respect, the only balderdash I see here is your statement. The only comments I see here are acknowledging the fine results this oil generated in this engine. Clement's comment is neutral; it merely points out that the additive levels do not appear high. Of course, they tend to look that way on GC as well. If you take the time and review the bulk of commentary on BITOG, even amongst those who use products like GC, Redline, or M1, you'll find that most of us are very well aware that almost any oil, even the cheap ones, will produce outstand results so long as they are used within the limits of their design.

My only complaint with it is similar to 3-4 other ST synthetic user remarks that our engines idled rougher with it.

Mine idled rougher continuously after around 1K of a 5K OCI. I used this oil twice - it rough-idled twice after 1K. After switching to Pennzoil Platinum, the idle has remained smooth - now into around 2.5K of an expected 7K OCI that I have planned with it.

I have got 2 jugs of this left. I am glad to see that my selection was a good one. Good UOA by the way. I have a 2K3 Durango with the 4.7. 60,000+ miles. I did a run to Bryce Mountain and the truck ran great! No complaints from me.
