hey guys, any recommendation on what trans fluid i should put in my 99 dodge neon's manual trans?

spec calls for gm syncromesh or the mopar stuff... any advantage to either or to an aftermarket fluid?

it's not a fancy car, and it's just a daily beater, but i want the trans to last as long as possible and take the minimum in unnecessary wear... thoughts?

The owner's manual will specify Chrysler fluid only - of course. I did some work on a friend's 2000 Neon awhile back & used Amsoil Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5w30 - Amsoil MTF - will great results. Easy shifting, even in cold Maine winter weather. Holds about 2 qts if I remember correctly.

You need a fluid that meets MS-9417. The GM Synchromesh stuff is equivalent to MS-9224 though it might work just fine.

There are aftermarket fluids that meet both specs.

Amsoil MTF, Redline MTL, BG Syncro-shiftII, Torco MTF.... are some to try.

Gm has a full synthetic synchromesh , and a dino which is almost identical to the Pennzoil synchromesh.
The Redline MTL is superb.
