TZ and others, I appreciate the encouragement.
To be clear, the scratched mains were meant to show lack of overall dirt, they were my, for photo, own, deliberate scratches.

All the rods were worn, and benefitted from undersize bearings - 6 full .001, 2 just .0005 split. I left all between .0016 and .0019, both within a rod width and overall - in the high third of the spec, both Dodge and SP. More reading last night tells me my OEs were tri bearings, and probably did their job - sacrificed their thin, first layer. I feel pretty hood I caught them here.
Doing mains today, starting at .000 as 5 looks so good!

Since birth was a way of saying since the original purchase at the dealership in April of 1999.

And, was maintained on M1 for it's life.
(Except, probably, any dealer oil changes coincident with other service - mostly plate.)
Not a discussion: I (and it) have been M1 only since before I bought this truck - probably 94 or so.

Many vehicles are still pretty on M1.
All my other vehicles stay pristine.
I agree there's something about this one.

These motors spent time with leaking plenum plates before repairs.
Which would / could be like a PCV failure.

Being clear with your language is beneficial in discussions like these, using phrases like "per my ownership" are needlessly vague and encourage alternative takes, like you not being the original owner.

What was the average oil change interval that you ran?

Varnish, and sludge, are the result of things like the breaking down of a lubricant's constituents and that product's contaminant carrying capacity being exceeded, allowing those byproducts of operation to plate-out on metal surfaces. Sludge will form in areas that aren't exceedingly hot, and will have a moisture component, while varnish will happen on areas that get hot and does not have a moisture component. If you have sludge, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll have varnish, but varnish doesn't mean you'll have sludge.

So, how do we get here?
The reason you get varnish, as I noted, is because the contaminant carrying capacity of the lubricant has been exceeded. These products are:
- Combustion byproducts (blow-by and PCV vapours for example)
- Fuel dilution
- Oil breakdown (VII polymers, oxidation of the base oils)

I'm sure there are other mechanisms that I've not mentioned.

With an appropriate OCI for the conditions, one shouldn't get much, if any, varnish. What an appropriate OCI looks like will depend on both the lubricant and condition of the equipment and the amount of contamination it generates. Since we are seeing considerable varnish here, clearly something was resulting on those parameters being exceeded. Yes, a faulty PCV system, blow-by or some other mechanism where significant combustion byproduct makes its way into the sump will more rapidly degrade the lubricant.

My take on your bearing wear is likely similar to yours, and that it is the result of the pick-up being plugged, starving the engine of lubrication. I'm not sure how you would have avoided this if you were running reasonable OCI's. An analysis of the constitution of those blocking deposits would be interesting, it's possible that it could be foreign to the oil, perhaps from a very small coolant leak, but I expect that's beyond the scope of this project.

I still recommend a pulling of the engine, which would allow you to send out the crank to a machine shop to be checked and bearings properly sized as well as provide the opportunity to clean things up more with it on a stand.

Dodge specs #1 main very tight, no one else I've read does.
Anyone know why?
 
Got the mains done - 1-5, 1/1, 0/1, 1/1, 0/1, and a 0/0 - again all to spec except 3 which did just make 'service' spec.
Meticulous cleaning, primed, fired up, spun distributor just a bit, and driving fine!
Not quite 40psi on dash, cruising hot, while back to 10W40 (20W50 was zeroing before).
I'm gonna' go 500 miles, do O&F again, and examine.

MY torque wrench fell apart, would not repeat calibration, so I bought the HF digital adapter.
Wow, what a cool tool!
 
I'll chime in....these are a tough old motor. The scratches are nothing. Dont bother with plastigage, Just replace bearing with what ever was in it, I assume std. size. Wash good and lube well with oil on assembly and torque to spec. Make sure change rear main seal too. Use new oil pump..If u know what u are doing it will go another 100k. The crap in pickup is stuff from not being careful when it was apart a couple of times.
Agree, probably crap that fell down when heads were off, got to pack with shop rags. I would plastic gauge and then use bearing lube and torque correctly
 
I had been fighting OP light for 40K before I did heads.
Hindsight, I really suspect the dealers quickie plenum gasket repairs - at least twice before 100K.
(No way I would have missed a 1/4 by 2 inch piece... I vacuum coming and going, even with the rags.)

Was leery to run it as inspection expired, got I got that and 60 on it.
Smooth, quiet, hot idle needle hits the 4 in 40 on the dash!
I'm pretty sure I bought 50K (10 years of dump and farm) - maybe 100K 🤞.

I did do something weird I caught on this job. I was clean paint brushing as I final vacuumed. When I went to close up I saw a bit of lifter snap ring out of the lifter, with a hair in it. I thought it was the fishline I used to keep track of my bearing rolling cotter pin, but that was weird also because I had tracked that. Came to realize my brushing had caught the lock ring, lifted it, snagged the hair from the brush, and tore it out. So they all got checked again...
