got a 98 civic with 200,000 miles, the ac blows fine and the air is cold but when u turn the ac on the car makes a loud shreeling noise, the noise might last 30 secs or just a few seconds, but it is so loud i'm ashamed to leave it on for too long..but when you turn the ac off, the noise goes away immediately, and the car never has made the noise unless the ac was on....any ideas guys, i have no idea where to start!

Belts stretch and break in when you first put them on and usually require a few re-tightens as they break in. If I was a betting man, I'd bet that they are all a bit loose and need re-tightening.

Belt tension is #1, but you may have a faulty compressor that is really dragging. or an overfilled system - maybe too much oil.
Don't panic - it's probably just the belt!

BIG $$$.

I doubt that's your problem, more likely a loose belt or the dryer has plugged up and it causing high pressure which causes the compressor to work too hard.

Have it checked out before whatever it is gets worse...

ok guys, the whining has stopped but now my wife tells me ac is blowing, but the air is not that cold, what could this be, thanks alot!!!

If it's blowing and the compressor is cycling on/off for more than just a few seconds it could be low on refrigerant. Pressure gauges are needed to see this.
