So my grandparents are heading out next week on a 1,000 mile round trip and I need to change the oil in their truck. The vehicle has roughly 135,000 miles with the 4.6 (great motor btw). Its used 10w-40 all its life, the first 100,000 it used yb and I switched to GTX since then. I had always had good results with it (and so did my dad in his 01 5.4 f-150).

Anyone think I should switch back or keep it with the GTX? I'm debating since I've now switched to Pennzoil platinum and I keep hearing YB is the one of the best dino oils out there. I would like to switch them to PP but I'm worried about the high mileage and they also won't let their vehicle go longer than 3k OCI lol.

If its only a 3K OCI, use the least expensive oil you can find (5 quarts of Formula Shell oil + filter $9.99)

But if I only had a choice between the two choices , I would go with YB.

The rumors are true, YB is one of the best dino's on the market. BITOG produces much more positive chatter about YB then GTX by far. With 3k OCI's, I would see absolutely no reason to move over to Platinum, since you live in the warmer climates of Texas. Understand that GTX is fine, but for the $$$, YB is a better choice in my opinion.

Just spend a little time in the UOA and I even found a VOA somewhere down the line. Between the two you mentioned, Pennzoil YB is the better in my opinion. You might want to consider the Pennzoil 10W-40 high mileage. I guess that would be BB for Brown Bottle.

I would take YB, Valvoline WB, Havoline, Chevron Supreme, Motorcraft Syn blend, etc. over GTX anyday.

Good mention Ben99GT, I forgot all about Motorcraft Syn blend. Motorcraft is usually cheaper than YB and is a synthetic blend, which gives you that added security when you umm... go a little over on mileage on your OCI. It's currently what I'm using in my vehicles.

What's wrong with GTX?

Nothing really, I just think there are better, yet equally affordable conventionals out there. JMO...

I guess I'm the odd man out.

GTX

Motorcraft makes a great oil too its a semi synthetic made by Conoco Phillips (last time i checked) i would use 5w30 in the older high milage modular engines and yes they are great motors with the proper care they will go over 350,000 miles.. The newer modulars use 5w20 97 called for 5w30 but was since back spec. to 5w20

Bingo, GTX is a great oil thats become too pricey of late.

I would not use 10W-40 in a 4.6, it's just too thick. I run 5W-20 in a high mileage 96 4.6 and it works great. If I were to go thicker, 5W-30 would be as high as I would go.

If I was in Billings I would recommend the 5W-30 with those miles, but he is in Texas and the 10W-30 will work just fine in the 97.
