96 Taurus aftermarket Keyless entry/remote start

My daughter has a 96 Ford Taurus that she wants to get a reasonable priced remote start keyless entry system. Trunk release would be a bonus. She does not care about the alarm feature per se.
Viper, Bulldog, Avital, Crimestopper, Audiovox?
She is in Portland, ME I was thinking something from Bestbuy or that type of store that she could have it installed at. Is there anything for a reasobable price that won't to expensive to install. Thanks

Audiovox is the best bang for the buck IMO. I have had four of their units installed in as many cars. Never an issue except replacing a battery in a remote once
 
Did you install them? I'm in Washington state and she is in Maine. So she will have to have somebody install it for her. I have a 98 version of her car that would be nice to get the same set up for. I'm sure that I could probably handle it on my car.

I have a guy here locally that my mechanic (at the time) referred me to. He does a great job. The first one I had put in my Taurus was $130 out the door installed 10 years ago. Had the same guy put one in my Ranger Pickup three years ago for $180.

I would ask around (mechanics are a good source.) Those things can be a PITA if the installation is messed up. Wouldn't touch one myself on a double dog dare bet.

The vast majority of aftermarket alarms, Audiovox included, are made by DEI.
 
If you don't object to buying from China, I bought a remote door lock system on EBay about 5 years ago. They sell for about $20
It has worked perfectly ever since.

It was really quite an easy installation on my Toyota truck.
 
I'm trying to get a system that can be installed by a shop for her. I was quoted $327 at BestBuy for a RF1W6AM Compustar. I also got a quote from a mobile install guy for the same one for $270.75.
Though with a mobile guy I would worry about warranty, but I guess BestBuy could go out of business as well.

You are worried about Warranty, on a door lock instal on a 96 Taurus?

Directed Electronics (Viper) will be the very best you can buy. I just saw in the ad for Best Buy in my Sunday paper Best Buy is running a sale on the Viper remote start for $185.00 installed. If they have the same pricing where your daughter lives that will very likely be your best price for a good and reliable remote start. Be aware they may charge extra for interfacing with the door locks and power trunk release. Those options involve a bit of extra labor and may require extra relays.

DEI will have a lifetime warranty on the remote start unit, provided it is installed by an authorized DEI dealer. DEI is the very best and most reliable remote start or alarm unit you can buy. They work great and last forever, provided they are installed properly. You can visit www.directed.com for more info. DEI does manufacture a few other brands such as Clifford and Avital but DEI does not now and has never made any Audiovox products.

Well going with a Viper 4103V for her car. About $300 installed. Please don't tell me I'm getting ripped off on this......

I'm thinking of getting a unit for my car a 98 Taurus and installing it myself......Don't know which brand/model though.......
 
The Viper system is the best you can buy. It will do fine as long as it is installed correctly. I guess $300.00 is a fair price in Maine.

If you plan on doing your own remote start check out Crutchfield. Viper is not supposed to be sold over the counter without installation by an authorized Viper dealer. However, Crutchfield sells the Python 414 keyless entry/remote start unit for $199.00, and all this month shipping is free. Python is a DEI brand and is the same as Viper. Python has the same lifetime warranty but Python products usually cost less than Viper. Crutchfield has very good technical support and they can help over the phone if you run into trouble with the installation. Here is a link to check out the Python remote start:

Unless you have some sort of factory vehicle immobilizer system it should not be very hard at all to do a remote start on your Taurus. You need to be able to use a volt meter and have a good working knowledge of wiring, relays and diodes to install the system correctly.
