95 Ford Escort Tranny Question

My 95 Ford Escort Transmission has stopped going into overdrive, it takes off slow and progresses through the gears, but stops in 3rd. When i take my foot off the gas, it goes into neutral, then goes back into gear when i give it gas. I figured i'd change the fluid, but it hasent helped at all. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Probably time for a new transmission. You may want to check the shift linkage and kickdown cable for proper adjustment, but it sounds like the overdrive section of the trans is done.

I agree that it sounds like the transmission is toast.

However, you could have a good flush done and see if it helps. There could be a piece of junk stuck blocking a passage somewhere. The flush might get it out and might not.

The '95 Escort transmission is computer-controlled, so the first thing to do would be to check for codes. It's been a while since I looked at one, but I don't recall them having a kickdown cable.

Also check the TPS. Ford was timing a lot of things in the transmission using this sensor at this time.

That transmission is a Mazda transmission and most transmission shops wil not touch the inside of this transmission

The 95 escort trans is not computer controlled in 1995. All shifting is done by hydraulic pressure. Starting in 96 electronic control/hydraulic shifting was brought in. I bought my daughter a 95 escort wagon new in 95 and just had to throw a rebuilt into it last year, it lost 1-2 upshift from a blown accumulator seal and she cooked the 1-R band driving for another couple of days. I have a 97 escort that has a nice bundle of wires going into it, disconnect it and all you have is 1st and reverse and a flashing check engine light.

No, that's not true. Even in 1991 the Escort's transmission is computer controlled. I just checked the shop manual (yes, you made me go and dig it out, aren't you happy now?) and in 1995 the computer has the following connections to the transmission (for a 1.9L--the 1.8L is also computer controlled, but it is most likely that the one we're discussing here is a 1.9L):

Turbine Speed Sensor
Vehicle Speed Sensor (this is actually connected to the computer and is used as input to determine when to shift. It's not just for cruise control)
4 solenoids in the transmission: Three shift solenoids and one TCC solenoid.
Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor

BTW, the Escort 4-speed automatic used since 1991 is the 4EAT which stands for 4 Speed Electronic Automatic Transaxle.

there is no check engin light, but i will try to pull some codes, i did go through some water the other day, maybe something electrical blew.

Strange, when I pulled the trans out of the 95 escort wagon there where only three connectors, one single wire connector for trans temp, one two wire connector at the speedo cable housing for vss, if disconnected cruise does not function, but the speedo still works and one two wire connector at the gearshift selector input shaft on top of the transmission. No internal wiring at all, I had the trans out on the floor and disassembled. Now the 97 escort has 1 temp, 1 vss, 1 aux vss (cruise) and 1 14wire connector for solenoid control. I could only pull four trans codes out of the 95, the 97 trans has about 35 possible codes.

If this car has a shifter range sensor switch (forget what they call it) look at it REAL CLOSE for corrosion or maybe even change it on a whim.
