Going to change rear end lube on my bought new 94 F 150 4.9 for first time (110k miles). I bought the Victor Reinz 711481000 cover gasket. It is fairly thick and kind of looks like it may have some cork content. I have some gasket shellac and also some Permatex no. 2 non hardening type gasket sealer on hand. Does anyone have recommendations regarding the use of either of these sealers on the gasket during installation?

When I last changed the gear oil a couple years back on my Ford 8.8, I used a Fel Pro gasket and applied # 2 Permatex on the cover side of the gasket to hold it in place during installation. No leaks.

Yeah, last 8.8 I did, I just used the Ford Grey RTV (the stuff they prescribe for use in oil on the Powerstroke) and it never leaked.

That Motorcraft grey RTV works really well on anything I’ve ever used it on. I’ve sealed many diff covers with it… years later they are still bone dry with not even a hint of seepage. Part number for the small tube is TA-29

Yeah, same, it's like the ultimate universal RTV, used to use it on the Windsor intake end seals.
