93 grand prix tranny problem!

A friend of mine has a 1993 pontiac grand prix with a 3.1L V6 and 4T60 trans. Anyway we were cruising around today and he stopped at a red light and when he went to go the car would not move at all nothing in forward or reverse gears

. It was working ok before that the only problem he had with it was it was a little slow to shift to 2ND gear then all of a sudden BAM it would not go into any gear. Anyone have any ideas what happened here? I was thinking that maybe the power transfer chain inside the trans broke also he had changed the transmission fluid and filter a couple of weeks ago. Would there be any possablility that the filter may have fallen off inside the trans? Other than that i dont have any idea why the trans would all of a sudden just stop working

4T60? or 4T60-E? There is a significant difference between them.

Without a teardown...its anyone's guess. How many miles, and was the fluid in bad shape when it was changed?

I had a similar problem. rough 1st and 2nd upshifts. one day, the flexplate broke. I couldn't shift at all. when I replaced this 20 dollar part, everything was fine again. does the car start and run? if it does, it's not the flexplate.

I just found out it has a 4T60-E trans. The car has 213k on it my friend said the fluid was a redish brown when he changed it and it had a normal transmission fluid smell it did not smell burned. The engine still starts and runs normally so it couldn't be a broken flexplate. Since it has an electronically controled trans could it be a computer related problem?

Is that 213k on the transmission? It may be the trans just gave up the ghost.

Yup that's 213k on the whole car including the transmission.

213k on an early-model 4T60-E is actually pretty good. Not built quite as good as the 4T60 and the electric parts (the reason for the -E designation) were somewhat more failure-prone.

Probably time to have the transmission in for a shop visit. No inexperienced amount of mucking around is going to get it working properly.
