93 dodge atf 3 or dexron or universal?

the question is for my recently purchased 93 dodge spirit that i am freshening up.
the auto transmission calls for dex if 3 spd ,+3 if 4 spd or lockup converter.the dipstick says dex.the transmission is a 3spd behind a 4 banger.right now i am about to do a partial change with 3 qts of dex.that will be a 33% change out.
in a few months i plan on doing a filter and fluid change and i was debating on which type of fluid.go with the dex?upgrade to +3 or even+4?or go with a universal synthetic like coastal,which is a suggestion from a local trans shop for an upgrade on 727 trans?the fwd auto transmission is a 727 derivative,so i think it would be an equivalent.
opinions people?

I have been through a transmission change out on my dodge, my experience is to use what dodge says to use, then add one bottle of Lubegard red for automatic transmissions(chrysler product for oem transmissions), U can find it a Napa, red bottle , but ask the clerk too. If u wish to to www.lubegard.com and read all u can, I dont have transmission problems anymore. I do not flush transmissions anymore either, just drop the pan and change filter IMO.

In the recent 91 Dynasty I got, I have thought about putting ATF+4 in it. I don't see why not.

Use ATF4. Those TCC clutches don't like dexron.

I have used Amsoil universal synthetic in 2 front drive A604 Dodge transmissions and a truck with the overdrive version of the 727 with excellent results.

The Spirit is not based on the 727 trans.

Several five-speed manual transmissions were available with the naturally-aspirated and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, but relatively few Spirits were equipped with manual transmissions. All the Spirit R/T's came with the A-568 heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission. From 1989 to 1991, all V6 Spirits came with the electronic four-speed A604 overdrive automatic, which became optional equipment in 1992 and remained optional until 1995. The three-speed Torqueflite automatic was the most popular installation on 4-cylinder Spirits, and was also standard equipment with the V6 engine from 1992 through 1995. Although a 5-speed manual was offered with the V6 engine in the smaller Shadow, this combination was not available in the Spirit.

okay.
i thought i had read on allpar somewhere that it was based on the 727 family.since it was referred to as a torqueflite i thought that was reasonable.
i just looked again at the stick and it says atf plus type 7176.which would be +3 or +4.i guess i mis-remembered.lol.which is a good reason to post here.a double check.

Yes the 727 has been around since I believe the mid 60s. Was used in trucks and vans on up to motor homes. It is for Rear wheel drive only with V-8 engines. I think it was used in the Turbo diesel as well.
