I got a 01 auto trans Dodge diesel and its time to do a transmission fluid change. What do you guys reccomend. The Murrys by my house has amsoil and its says it can be used in place of mercon,dexron,atf+4 etc, but I always thought these specs where quit differant and unable to be met by a universal product.

Yes, AMSOIL ATF has been tested against the ATF+4 Chrysler specs and does very well. Lubrizol either conducted or supervised the testing.

Ken, Until someone can show the actual results that it gives the same response and wear, I will not believe those claims. I have the torque curves on my site, but if you want the whole report, send me an email and I will forward it to you.
Read the Cherokee buletin boards and you will find hundreds of problems with Dexron type products in those transmissions. It results in a much shorter life. I had Dexron III in my 93 Grand Cherokee and eliminated hard shifts when I learned of ATF+3.

Over the counter Chrysler ATF+4. Where is it available? Only the dealer? How much $$ ?

Recently I noticed ATF+4 transmission fluid being sold at an auto parts store called Murray's(They also sell some Amsoil products). I don't know how wide spread that chain is around the country but that may be of some help.
If I remember correctly, it was in Mopar labeled bottles and I think the price was $5.99/quart It could have been a buck more but I remember thinking it was a dollar or two less than I heard what the dealer charges.
FWIW, I bought a 2002 Chrysler(PT Woodie) with an auto about 6 months ago so, I personally try to keep a look-out on prices and availability for when my time comes up for servicing the trans.

I've encountered a number of guys who were extremely pleased with Amsoil Universal in their Chrysler transmissions (46RH/42RE/45RFE). Improvements were perfect shifting from start in the winter, less slipping, cooler temps towing, etc. Two are friends who regularly haul substantial (>5K) loads. They'd shoot me before going back to dealer +4 fluid, let alone department store +3.
To my knowledge, the only "modern" Chrysler transmission that's okay with Dexron is the AW4 (XJ's & early '93 ZJ's). Those can use ATF+3/+4 or Dexron, but it's an entirely different beast.
Redline makes their C+ ATF which was supposed to be +4 compatible. Noticed their website only says 7176 compatible now. (Someone kick their webmaster for me. 45 seconds to get to useful information.)
I'll go along with a previous post that said you must be prepared to switch back if the fluid isn't performing for your vehicle. For whatever reasons, some transmissions seem more particular than others, even of the same model.

I've had real impressive results with the Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF I flushed my three vehicles out with it early this summer.
It is universal and I think it is one of the best products they make. Refer to the website "amsoil.com" go to product information and then ATF.
