'89 Toyota truck intermittant starting problem

Finally got the Yota running again '89 2wd truck. The intermittant starting problem remains. I've replaced EVERYTHING twice-relay, starter,cap rotor,coil, etc, etc.. Its about to go to a master tech, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas? It will start 20 times than not start, but can be compression started. After it cools down for an hour or so, it will start again. I thought it may be the flywhell hanging up on the starter, but there isnt any noise associtaed with the problem. Im going to get a push button starter probably to rule out a bad second starter(bosch ) which i dont think is likely. A bad distributor maybe? ignitor?I have no erathly idea.sounds like a solenoid but , like I say, Ive replaced the starter, and the solenoids on the new starter in that model. I belive ive been told the problem can be diagnosed even without the car starting normally as it is intermnittant in nature. Thanks.

No start or no crank?

I am looking at the parts you replaced and don't really know exactly what the problem is from your description.

You replaced a starter (no crank concern) and also replaced cap/rotor/coil (no start concern).

Does not start. Ive replaced relay with 2 aftermarket relays( if the relay clicks it works right) and Ive done everything. Why would it start again after an hour or so after it cools?Ive bought anew battery and cleaned all cables and contacts and Im goin crazy.Can an expert do a voltage drop test or something?

You can do a voltage drop test yourself. Have you examined/cleaned the grounds yet? I had a 22R Celica that ate my lunch all because of a loose engine-chassis ground. I pulled the starter off it twice and had it checked before I put my thinking cap on.

+1 for clean/tighten ground wires (and, of course, check their resistance with a multimeter).

I'm still not sure that you mean that the starter will not turn, OR that the engine turns over but will not start.
A common problem with an intermittent start is burnt contacts on the starter solenoid (a quick cheap fix)
What engine do you have 22R or V6 ?

We sold a lot of them thar igniter thingys back in my wrecking yard days.

Had to be a reason we sold so many.

Also, consider plug wires.

And, clean every ground you can find and look for corrosion on/in wires... especially towards the ends where moisture could creep in.

Look for nicks in wires where moisture could enter at.

How old is the battery?

Rebuilt starters are generally notorious in regards to quality. May wanna' check it out.

Oh.... Toyota has been around long enough that an independent shop may have a Toyota expert available for less than what the dealerships charge.

thanks everyone. Its going to a master electrical specialist.Why would it only do it when its hot(not crank ) sometimes and start again after its hot. Maybe i did get two bad starters. Possibly a bad ground someplace I guess.What about aftermarket relays? junk? if the relay clicks does that mean its good? Maybe ignitor.waht happens when the flywheel hangs up on the starter-does it make noise? Thanks again.

My Passat had a similar problem: difficulty starting a cold engine, but it would always start after 15+ tries. It threw a CEL. Went to the dealership, they did a diagnostic, replaced the coolant temperature sensor, and now it starts like new.

Toyota has a TSB out for the issue you described concerning the 2003 and up Matrix. I know there is a huge difference in years but "maybe" the fix is the same?

It is probably going to be the igniter assembly or fuel injection relay is on it's way out. Unfortuntely we need more information and better despription. You really never answered wether it was a no-crank or no-start situation. You did not mentiopn if you could hear the fuel pump runing or smell gas etc..... Is their spark when you are cranking if it crank's etc......

'89 22R truck Carbuerated. No fuel system problems, No Ignition switch or keyed switch problems. It' s problem is a NO Crank intermittantly when hot. Cools down after 1-2 hours and will start. will compression start when wont start.Have replaced relays, starter, checked grounds,new battery, checked coil. Wondering about quality of aftermarket relay-it does "click" but no crank. New Bosch starter and checked original Toyota starter which tested good. Solenoid on starter . Will try genuine Toyaota relay (expensive as are all dealer parts) and a new ignitor module. I havent checked harness ground to engine, but appears to be only a ground off battery into frame on left fender which is clean.Distributor? cant be plug wires or fouled plug can it-engine runs very very well when operating. thanks so very much everyone.

I am almost certain I know what your problem is. My friend had the exact problem with his 91 yota 2wd with the 22re, anyway check the connection where your wires actually run into the starter. The connection there could just be dirty or loose. This was several year's ago. I can't remember how they connect or there would be more detail to this. Check that out and hope this help's at all. His symtom's were start perfect one time then nothing the next not even a click. Current not getting to the starter.

Actually, now that I think about it, that cant be it, because it only does it whwn its hot. Everything tells me "solenoid", but ya know, I doubt if that second Bosch starter I bought( after I had the original rebuilt) has a bad solenoid.But i will try new wires, ignitor, Solder leads to starter, new neg ground terminals and cleaning. MY #@$%!, if this Toyaota 22r wouldnt run so well for another 100,000 miles i wouldnt even bother with it!
