Ariens Ikon 52” zero turn. 38.9hrs on the clock. I’ve had this mower new since 2023.

I was going to replace the blades on it this evening and when I got on it to start it and bring it into the yard, the starter actuated, but didn’t turn the engine over even after I switched the ignition back off. I grabbed a wrench I had sitting near by and tapped the starter and it stopped. I hopped back on it and tried again and this time it worked fine and started the engine but the engine was running crappy like bogged down and the starter was still running even after the engine had started.

I’m out of daylight to properly dig into this issue, but does this sound like the solenoid or the starter?

I'm pretty sure the solenoid on the 691v is not on the starter. So if rapping on the starter stopped it, its probably the bendix sticking, unless its coincidence that the starter stopped and it was not really the rapping of the starter. The solenoid is mounted on the frame.

I would replace the solenoid first though as its less than a starter.

It's hard to tell without a little more troubleshooting. It could be the bendix shaft sticking as well. Did you notice if the wires to the starter were hot?
I did not check them. I know the starter sounded….aggravated if you will, when I tried to start the mower. It didn’t sound right while it was trying to do its thing.

Tomorrow I’ll look at it again with better light and report back. This thing ran perfectly fine when I parked it about ten days ago after mowing the lawn.

i updated my above post.
It could be the solenoid if it was coincidence that the starter freed up while you were tapping on it, but not really the tapping that did it.

solenoid is less expensive to start with.

My toro, with the 651v ( which is close to the same as the 691v) has the solenoid mounted on the frame.

Could it be possible a mouse or something got in the starter/flywheel area and is jamming up the works?

Solenoid is mounted on frame. I just went out and confirmed with flashlight.

Agree with the others that it needs to be inspected if the gear that pulls up to engage the flywheel comes back down after ignition is put in the run keyed position.

Im such a dumbass. I happened to notice that the spark plug boot was completely off of the plug on the left side. I changed the plugs about a week ago. I plugged it back in and fired it up and it runs perfectly fine. Sorry guys.
Glad you got it fixed because this grass is growing quick with all the rain & warmer weather.
