Is it mainly compression that makes them call for 89 or higher octane in 2 cycle equipment? I tried it one time in my old echo trimmer and the would misfire and stall randomly. I'm not sure if that was the fuel or just the trimmer because it was already a bit finicky since it was so old. Does the fact that they make them run so lean cause them to need higher octane to?
