84 Camry ? about Motor

I owned a late '83 Camry LE new from August 1983 until mid-2000; about 140,000 miles. The engine had fuel injection and was rock solid. Never burned any oil. Auto trans had to be rebuilt maybe at 90,000(?). 1983 to 1986 was the first generation platform.

I only gave it up because of little stuff that I foolishly didn't make time to fix back then; headliner needed replacement, backup lights; biggest headache was it needed a new EGR to pass smog; little stupid stuff that I would know better now to just fix.

Hello there,
What made the Trans go bad at around 90k? Do they all do that or have you heard of that a lot with the 1st gen? Any input advice to give me would be much appreciated.

Sorry I can't remember back that far... I always had an opinion that it should have been covered by one of those unpublished TSB/warranties (I'm blanking out on the correct terminology here). And the car's been gone from the fleet for 10 years. I thought then and do now that it was still one of the best cars ever assembled; certainly for the early 80s.
