84 Camry ? about Motor

Hello to all,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the 2FSE motor on a 1984 Camry and what you think of that car. It is a automatic and I was wondering what problems anyone has had with these years and model cars. I would appreciate any guidance as I was looking to buy one with low mileage but want to know if you guys think its worth it on here please help? Or if you think it’s a great model please chime in about that as well e.g. negatives and positives about this model. Also can someone advise me what years are compatible e.g. 82-84 or 84-86 I can’t remember which years/models were compatible for Camry’s please advise?

My uncle had one of these first gen camrys and had front end issues but that could be my brat cousin flying up the dirt driveway at ridiculous speeds.

If it has a feedback carburetor I'd be very very careful about things; finding parts will be an expensive nightmare. Low mileage to me would say fuel dilution from that carb.

Other than the use of a timing belt, I know nothing bad about the 2FSE engine. Know that the t-belt was replaced recently, and if it hasn't, buy a t-belt, pulleys, and water pump.

I bet there is actual forums for that particular car, as far as i know they are good vehicles but the forum would probably help you a lot more and tell you what to look out for.

-E on such Toyota engines means it has Multi Port Fuel Injection. Toyota MPFI systems are usually trouble free.

Thanks all you guys are the best. I will have to think about it somemore not sure if the motor is 1.8 or 2.0 they made both that year. It is a hatchback so that should narrow it down but I can't remember what motor it had 1.8 or 2.0.

^ interesting and rock auto does show fuel injectors for an 84 camry.

I remember corollas having carbs until 1989 or so. Great news!

It depended on which model. In 1984, some Corrollas had an EFI engine.

IIRC. A 2F is the 4.2l Land Cruiser L6 motor.

I don't know the 2SFE. The 3SFE is what they used in the '86 Celica . Solid motor. No real durability problems. I would imagine any 2S variant of that motor to be similar

From what I've heard the 2S-E was solid. Not perticularly powerful, but it was built like a tank, like all earlier Toyota engines. It was a 2.0 Liter, single cam 8 valve engine, with REAL fuel injection(Multi-Port). It's a little before my time, but all the "S" engines i've seen (3S-FE, 5S-FE, 3S-GE) have all been excellent.

From what I remember there is a block off plate on the head for a fuel pump on carb engines not sold in the us, that leak oil. I think its on the passenger side rear. You can reseal it with Toyota"Black Cheese", or Permatex Ultra Grey

Thanks for that piece of info about the engine block. I am going to look at the car again next week when I do I will look under the passenger side rear of the motor and hopefully find something. Thanks again for your help and input.

When you say its on the head do you mean its on the engine head or on the engine block confused please advise thanks.

From what I remember it was on the engine head, as I believe that the carb fuel pumps were driven by the cam.
My uncle had a Camry of this vintage, and had this problem.
I remember my dad saying this was a common problem on these engines. He's been working on Toyota's since 1980. I only started working on them in 2003.

I am going back to look at the car on tue or wed so I will give a good look at the passengers side of the engine head as you said and I will post back here after I look at it thanks.

Looks good to me its a small cover and it is sealed up good check it out. Thanks for your help with that one.
