80W-90 vs 75W-90

my car calls for GL-4 75W-90 in the Manual Trans.

I put in Chevron DELO ESI. 80W-90 because it worked great in my old 240Z. then I noticed that 75W-90 is recommended.

I live in the Desert Do you think that the 80w is to thick? I sure shifts better than what was in there. This is a new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

I know that some additives in gear oils can damage the copper and brass parts in a trans.

Like if it calls for GL-1 oil you need to use it only. I dunno about the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 though.

I'm running Sae40 engine oil in the manual trans in my pickup. Thats what Warner says to use in it!

Remember that engine oils and gear oils are rated differently. A 40wt motor oil is the same viscosity as an 80wt gear oil.

According to the chart I am running 20W-40/50 Vs 10w-40/50.
That should be fine in the Desert? right.

The "w" won't matter in hot weather. The Haynes manual for my '95 pickup says 20w can be run above 20F, 15w above 10F, and 10w above 0F. The 20w will give you a much more robust base oil. One other alternative you may want to consider is the 15w50 synthetic, which may be more robust that a conventional 20w50.

You are not going to have any issues in your enviroment. I would make sure that the Delo gear lube is dual rated GL4/GL5!!! If it is only GL5 rated I would get it out of my transmission asap!!!!! If a fluid is not dual rated and only wears a GL5 rateing their is a good chance that it might damage all of the syncos,bearings,thrust washers and buschings in your transmission.

Some of us can run a GL5 only product no problem because or transmissions are rated for use with GL4 or GL5. If you trans calls for GL4 please make sure your gear lube wears either a GL4 only rateing or a dual rateing of GL4/GL5!!

THe viscosity is not a problem at all. THe difference betwen the two in your environment is a non issue really.

The DELO ESI is GL-4/GL-5/MT-1. Does not harm yellow metals. Great stuff.
