Any 7mm besides 7mm WinMag is likely going to be hard to find at times. 7mm-08 is easy to find on the internet. It's really a great round that should have been more popular.


Around here the 7mm-08 is a bit hard to find. Strangely the 7WSM is around, its not cheap though. But boy is that one [censored] of a flat shooter. The 280 is nice no doubt about it, and I see ammo for it.

I'm fond of the 7 WSM and 6.5x284 that's all. A 25-06 is nice too!

Shoot, I'd put 20 rounds threw it a month or so. I thoroughly enjoy shooting. Takes some steam off life. My poor mosin has had a spam can shot through her over a years time. The Mini 30 is getting there.

I'm not sure if I've seen .280 ammo around here. I too like odd calibers. It's not like I wouldn't reload it. Look, more stuff to buy!

In Michigan 7mm-08 is everywhere even in modern up to date loading's. I had a custom built Mauser in 280 Rem (was stolen) that was a tack driver. I dropped two large white tails where they stood 275 yrd. & 310 yrd (range finder measurement) with 140 gr Nosler partitions. I could live nicely with the 7mm-08, it's close to the 280 with the lighter (140gr & under) bullets.

I bought all 3 cases from the CMP a few years back, before everyone and their brother jumped on the bandwagon. I only paid $381.00 for all 3 cases delivered to my door Fed Ex. (1,440 Rounds).

It's the Greek stuff that was loaded for the M1 Garand, and has the correct pressure curve for shooting in semi auto rifles. It comes vacuum packed in 2 Spam Cans per case, (240 rounds per can). I couldn't buy the brass that cheap. I don't even know if they sell it anymore. I know a lot of gun shops were buying it up, then jacking up the price and selling it per 20 round box. Shortly after that the CMP raised the price on it.

The stuff is loaded HOT, but it shoots really well in all of my .30-06 bolt guns, as well as my Remington 7400. It will keep me in .30-06 ammunition well into my retirement. After that I'll have a ton of once fired brass to load up.

How many rounds per year would you plan to shoot out of it?

If you're talking about 25-50 rounds per year, go with the 7mm-08. It is a great round, very versatile, and will be a nice addition to your collection.

If you're talking 100+ rounds per year, go with the .308. Ammo cost/availability wins out here.

As others have said, you already have a .30-06, so you probably don't really need another.

I'd be a little concerned about WSM/WSSM availability in anything except the most popular rounds like 300 WSM. I think the .270 WSM is popular too. My neighbor has a .243 WSSSSSSSSM and has a time locating ammo. And it's big $$ when he does stumble on a box. We probably overstate availability these days with the internet where you can find anything but you know you'll be able to feed your .308/.30-06 based rounds in the long term.

Those days are over. .308 or .223 is the only domestic thing you're going to shoot reasonable these days.

The days of super-cheap military surplus M2 ball ammo are over...You can still get 30-06 for reasonable, though. For my M1, I bought 500 rounds of this: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2503127...=ProductFinding


On sale at $360 for a box of 500, it's 72 cents a round. Not cheap, but far cheaper than most 30-06.

Not quite the price of .308, or 5.56...but not bad...

If you buy at Walmart IDK if there's a whole lot of difference in the price of .308 and 06. Not including the steel .308. For most people the cost difference isn't a big deal. They just don't shoot enough. If you do shoot a lot you better invest in a reloader if you don't want to shoot .223/Xx39/x54. Two shots for a $1 that cheap .308 goes for add up quick.

If you're going to shoot in any significant amount, you need to reload. No reason not to.

That's why I said it is not cheap. I reload so price is less of an issue. It's the flat shooting and long range capabilities of the round that got me hooked on it. YMMV

I'd have to vote .308 out of the two calibers.

Incredibly versatile cartridge, and we just had some of our rifle club come back from Palma, so it's got some incredible projectiles as well.
