My owners manual calls for SAE 90 or 85w-90 gear oil in the front diff. Can I use 75w-90 instead of the 85w-90? Do they even make 85w-90? Thanks for any help.

I'm just curious ... what part of what vehicle?

The last number is what's most critical. If it calls for a 90 weight gear oil, you should be able to use a 75W90, 80W90, 85W90 or straight 90.

I've never heard of a 85W90 either.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. The vehicle is my girlfriend's Montero Sport and it's for the front differential.

Can I use a GL-5 where GL-4 is specified? I know this may be a topic of some debate.
