75w-90 or 75w140 for Jeep?

Time to change the rear end oil in my 02 Wrangler. It has the Dana#44 rear axle, 3.73 ratio.

Local Napa has a great price on Amsoil and has 75w-90 and 75w-140 in stock. I don't pull anything with it although it's over 100F all summer.
 
I would just put the 75w-140 in it. The added protection will be worth it in the long run. Most cars & trucks are now specing 75w-140 now anyway.
 
I would go with the owners manual recomendation. I think you will find that 7590 will be recomended unless you are towing heavy frequently or in the mountains.
 
unless towing I stay with a thinner spec within mfr guidelines. The thicker lubes in axles definently yield a slight, but consistent drop in mpg. I run typical 75-90 up front where there's no wear, but must use a 140 in the rear due to worn parts. Lost a consistent .5 mpg after going to 140, but the cabin is much more quiet.

AmSoil 75w90 and 75w140 seems to mix well in my vehicles. That's what I'd do if it were mine. In fact, that's exactly what I did one three of mine.
 
In a Dana 44 I would give that axle all the help it can get. Run the Amsoil 75W140!! Just be careful to stay away from cheap 140Wt. gear lubes as they tend to channel really badly!
 
My mom's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is doing just fine on Royal Purple 75w140, which is by far the cheapest 75w140 I have ever found, around $10 per quart.
 
Quarts of Amsoil 75W140 is all my Rubicon's gears are ever going to see. I wheel quite a bit, but even if it was a pavement princess I would be hesitant to put 75W90 in it. By the way that front differential does see wear too! I pulled the drain plug on mine and it had just as much metal on it as the rear...she was fuzzy!
