I have a fresh 302 Ford, flat tappet, rv cam, 10.5:1 comp, edelbrock intake, 600cfm carb, headers. It was a basic rebuild and has been running (in my garage) for the last year. I used rotella for break in, dumped it, ran a 10W30 with comp-cams additive for a bit while starting and working on tuning it in my garage. Last year I switched over to a 15W40 collector auto oil that has a good zinc content and is formulated well. Now the ford oil pumps dont do well with high viscosity oil and I was wondering if you guys think the 15W40 is too thick? I put in an ARP oil pump shaft on the rebuild so faillure of the shaft isnt likely. Just curious if there is a product out there that I would switch to that is a little lighter but with the proper zinc for my flat tappet. Thanks!

I would see if you can get some Brad Penn racing oil.
Can probably run some Rotella 10W30.

Yeah I am not sold on the rotella. That is diesel oil right? I broke it in with that but there are too many additives/detergents that are unnecessary for a gas engine. I will check into the Brad Penn oil. The truck is only driven in the spring/summer, its a 51 ford F1 street rod. Thx.

Mobil 1 0w-40 would be fine given your RV cam. What are you running for valve springs?
Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30
zinc is about 1200 ppm

He's running an RV cam, not a Lunatti Voodoo, LOL! He doesn't need copious amounts of ZDDP here... Something with the Zn/Phos levels of Mobil 1 0w-40 will be MORE than adequate.

Brad Penn and VR1 don't have racing levels of zddp.
Brad Penn 1400ppm.
VR1 1300ppm.
Race levels of zddp that would go with crazy race cams and valve spring loads are in the range of 1800-2200ppm.
And besides, it's possible to design a low lift cam with mild valve timings that would generate high contact stresses at low engine speeds.
