In Michigan, the deposit per container is 10 cents. For a road trip from Utah to Michigan, he might be able to double his money. They would have to be marked Michigan deposit, though.

I note that this story comes from Utah. While Utah is not a dry state, the majority of residents there disfavor "adult beverages", so there was probably a little bit of moral lesson to this story.
