for years I used Amsoil and Mobil synthetic. I do not ride like I used to I barley get to take the bike out. Any how I stopped at Auto Zone to try Valvoline vh1 20w-50 they did not have any. So I figured just get some Harley Oil when I heard $35 for 4 qts of regular oil I was shocked.. I bought it but I will keep my eye out on this site for an alternative.

Reminds me when I bought Fram PH8s for my car for ~ $2.50 at AP but when I went to the boat store the same Fram was $7.99. Harley probably gets $4 royalty for every quart sold.

Stick with VR1. You can get it at AZ, Advance Auto, O'Reilley's, etc. for half what HD dino costs and it's a better oil. I had a hard time finding it last month when I did my oil change- someone cleaned out AZ when it was on sale for $2.79/qt so I ended up paying about $4.70/qt at O'Reilley's. Still a good deal compared to HD360 & my bike loves it...

Vr1 is good stuff, lots of zddp (last I looked), but I recall it said not to run it in your car more than 3000 miles. So probably fine in a bike as I don't think bike OCIs are that long, are they? (I haven't had a bike since '84 and that was a two stroke.)

My oci's have been at 1000 miles oil and filter.. I have run Amsoil since 2003. I know way over kill as I am older now and so is my bike this oil might see 1500 miles..

Seriously - if you are running 1K OCI's then you could run virtually any 20W-50 oil.

Do a search on this board and you will find that an excellent alternative is Havoline 20W-50.

Remember - oil must lubricate and must dissipate heat. It must also stay in the intended viscosity range. At 1K OCI's and even 2K OCI's... really, just about any 20W-50 will work for you.

yeah seriously ( i know oci's are way over kill) I have every oil change transmission and primary fluid change written down and what product I used the farthest I ever had an oil go was 1,300 miles.. I know insane but alot of times i only rode a 1000 miles a year. I did 13,000 miles the first 2 years I had the bike the last 8 years i did 7000 miles.

Harley specs OCI with dino or synthetic at 5k miles. Valvoline's website doesn't say anything about 3k mi OCI max, and in the M/C UOA section there are UOA's for VR1 that show it can easily handle 5k in a Harley.

I wish you lived next door to me- I'd never buy oil again. I'd handle your used oil disposal needs; it would go straight into my motor & I'd run it another 4k miles...

Are you willing to do some legwork to get a great oil at a fair price? Have someone to share a 24-quart case? Find a local Schaeffer rep and buy their #707 20W-50 oil.

What's a 24 pack generally run? Any links to UOAs?

Given the twin cam UOAs here, It'd have to be in the price range of VR1 before I'd consider it.

$7.95 for Harley Oil seems kinda pricey. But, paying the same or more for a boutique brand isn't gaining any better protection.
