It just seems incredibly complex for no reason. GM’s answer doesn’t help that perception.

Correct. The tail light has one function, to illuminate when asked to. The driver turns it on, presses the brake or activates the turn signal.

Not sure why the surprise.
This vehicle has unique and extremely limited run parts.
It likely requires expensive molds and or assemblies required to produce them that never see any real volume.

Save a big chunk of money and buy a Toyota Tundra Capstone. Lots of fancy lights as well.
