My 2017 Taurus Limited has the 6F50 transmission.

When accelerating at a normal/moderate pace, it will shift from 1st to 2nd. While in 2nd it'll climb a few hundred RPM (while still accelerating), then it feels as if a torque converter lockup (drop a couple hundred RPM) accelerate some more, then it'll shift into 3rd. 3rd it'll again climb a few hundred RPM (while still accelerating), then another TC lockup feeling (RPM drop) accelerate some more, then shift into 4th.

Under hard acceleration, it'll shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. without this feeling.

It has done this since new (well 4k miles when I bought it). Is this a normal characteristic of the 6F50? Just wondering.

I don't know about that transmission but it sounds normal. Getting into converter lockup early helps fuel economy.

FWIW; my ‘11 f150 with the 6 speed locks up in 3rd almost immediately after shifting into 3rd. 4th, 5th and 6th take their own sweet time locking up. If I accelerate aggressively it skip the 3rd gear lock up and won't lock till I throttle off. I have 3:73 gears.
My wife's Expedition with 3:15 gears and the same 6 speed trans has a totally different shift strategy with locking up, not like my truck at all. I think shift algorithms are different from model to model.

My 2016 acts the same. I think the TC stays locked even during the shift from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 using injector shutdowns to keep it smooth. I've never noticed throttle based rpm changes after lockup in 3rd gear (except maybe in tow/haul mode, but not 100% sure).

To the OP: completely normal.

With our 6F35 in our Explorer the shift point mph varies depending on the degree of throttle, light, medium & heavy. For example for a 2-3 shift in light throttle it's 13-17 mph, medium it's 26-34 mph and heavy it's 49-62 mph. Using a lighter throttle it'll shift more frequently to get to the same speed as using a heavier throttle. I guess it for fuel economy, though it can be annoying.

Could just be some E-throttle being taken away from you to lessen the load on the drivetrain.
