Hey guys. I am looking for some 6 x 9's for the rear deck of my 70 Chevelle that don't sound cheesy and can handle bass. Crutchfield sold me on some Kickers to replace my older Kenwood's but they sound like crap. Is there something out there that is good but won't break te bank?

Go Old School. Find a good, vintage pair of these with 20oz Magnets (any 6x9 with 20 oz magnets). Push 40 watts through them and they will sound old school good. Made in USA

Are they just free air mounted on the rear deck, or is there an enclosure behind them? You may need one for decent bass. It can be made out of plywood or MDF (at least 1/2" thick to decrease resonance), and carpet covered if trunk view matters.

^ Yeah I was going to ask if the trunk was airtight.

My dad had a buddy who got a first gen 1987 Mercury Sable. He claimed that the sound system was designed with the acoustics of the car in mind, a new thing at the time.

I have these in both of my Ram trucks and think they’re quite good.

I was going to second pioneer.

Truth be told, 3/4 of speaker sound quality depends on what’s behind it. Speaker manufacturers “guess” at what might be behind it and tune their mechanics based on that assumption. I once heard that the standard is to assume a 1 cubic foot space behind it, sealed. If you were to actually to this and that were true, you’d get to hear what the mfr intended. Unfortunately, it might not sound great, because some really focus on showroom glam, with unrealistically sparkly highs and the like, which translates horribly to real world sound.

The best 6x9s I’ve heard were pioneer 2 way, paper cones, mounted in the kick plate below the back seat of a VW bus. Phenomenal sound, and as cheesy as the song was, Achy Breaky Heart hit the top 40 and it came out about as dialed in as one could hope for.

And I’ve spent over 30 years as a musician with speaker building experience, FOH (front of house) sound and other hobbyist endeavors. Car audio is stupid hard to get right.

Might want to check out Rockford Fosgate Prime speakers, a regular head unit/radio can drive them. Had them in the Civic's rear deck, very nice bass, clean/crisp mids and highs an awesome speaker. Civic was only 20w x 4 from the radio.. Has a tweeter down at the base of the woofer cone. the 2-way is what I bought.. what I also like are the rubber surrounds, so being in the rear deck, sun beating down, it won't start dry rotting out like cloth or foam!

$89 a pair

I installed these in my 68 Charger and 73 Road Runner... Was a good speaker back then...

Pioneer Premier, infinity, or Focal if you want to go upscale. How much is your cap on price?
