With gas at over $2/gal. I am driving my wife's Cavalier to my job as much as possible. The result is that I'm not putting many miles on my 4x4 Ranger. I know 4K miles is no problem for Havoline 5w30 conventional or Motorcraft 5w20 blend. If it takes me 6 months to get to that figure in the Ranger, does 6 months time seem ok for these oils? My gut tells me yes. I drive mostly highway for 25 minutes one-way. Comments?

I use Havoline 10w30 and change oil and filter at 4 months regardless of (low) mileage. My 2001 Dodge truck (3.9 V-6) only sees about 1500 miles in four months. I use Purolator filters ($3.50 at Advance Auto Parts) on it now since the ACDelco price increase. The oil is 1.20 per quart at Sam's Club. The truck takes 4.5 quarts so the cost is a little over 9 bucks tax included. Just look at it this way. It's only one extra oil change in a year and you greatly reduce the chance of getting sludge. The book actually says to change @ 3 months on a low mileage truck.
If I remember correctly in Ford owners manuals it states that for normal driving conditions 6 months or 5,000 intervals, whichever occurs first, check the owner's manual.
6 months to accumulate 4,000 miles is not going to be a problem for your oil, especially if the trips themselves are long enough to get the oil up to temperature. Another factor is storage of your vehicle. If it is garaged most of the time then things are even easier on it as there is little chance for condensation drawing water into the engine.
