grbr95 we're still waiting for your sources to back your assertion that no filter is capable of going beyond 3,000 miles.Please post the names and certifications of your "multiple sources." If you are spending $25 on oil every 3 months please tell us the sump capacity of your vehicle. Havoline and Castrol run around $2 a quart, full price of course since you never buy oil on sale because that would make you "pucker." By my math that means your vehicle holds around 12 quarts of oil.That's a big sump. We really owe you a big heartfelt thank you because so many uninformed people have been using oil filters for longer than 3,000 miles along with all that "waistful" synthetic oil in complete ignorance until you came along to straighten them out. Your knowledge and wisdom on this matter will undoubtedly save untold thousands of engines from untimely demise.Keep up the good work.

Maybe we need to 'remind' the newer users here of an application that points to a benefit of PAO synthetic oils; namely, the 1MZ-FE Toyota engine.

Since you all have read about shearing and VI improvers, I'll just summarize that in this particular engine, there is a benefit to using (true) synthetic oil. (Also, used-oil anaylses have been nearly wear-free using Mobil 1 oil in this engine).

That's my 2 cents...

Yes, it was a blanket statment. All of what I said was merely opinion. But I will say that mechanic after mechanic with regard to their own cars have told me to change my oil every 3-4 months or 3k. And they are WELL aware of oil technology and veh technology now days. But yes, to each their own. So I'm a dino guy, but then, I don't have high performance vehicles.

grbr95 it's not a matter of "winning." You made the announcement that no filter is capable of exceeding 3,000 mile OCI's based on your numerous sources. I believe these sources should be acknowledged for their grounbreaking research in the field of oil filter longevity and for sharing this exciting news with us.

Hmmm...let me think about it. Your mechanic friends say change it every 3K miles. Yet well respected tribologists, chemists, and oil analysis professionals on this site say otherwise.

Oil life monitors in vehicles safely take the engine oil well past 3K miles based on driving habits, cold starts and numerous other factors. These oil life monitors are tested by the engineers who designed and built the engine. The manufacturer has to stand behind the engine for a specified period of time, in which the manufacturer wants few if any warranty claims. And still they install these oil life monitors in their cars that clearly exceed the maximum life of engine oil and filters, which you and your mechanics have established to be 3,000 miles. In many cases they grossly exceed that 3,000 mile limit.

Even the owners manual in my new Subaru advises a 5,000 mile severe service schedule and a 7,500 mile "normal" schedule. Those dastardly engineers at Subaru clearly want my engine to self destruct before it's out of the 5 year warranty period. Clearly it's a conspiracy to ruin engines so car companies can sell more cars.

Any chance your "mechanics" all work for Jiffy Lube?

hmmm...i just kind of wanted to now which yall liked better, havoline or mc. sorry to start a filter war i guess....

thank u to everyone who put in there 2cents though. i think i may use the mc syn blend. i was just intrigued by havolines moly content i guess

Just wanted to make sure that the advice given was correct for you so you could make a decision with information that contained a measure of accuracy.

In all honesty either one will do fine in just about any engine you put them in. I've kicked around the idea of trying Havoline in my Subaru-but wouldn't hesitate to use MC either. I current use Amsoil but it seems a bit noisy with Amsoil (gee-a noisy boxer engine?).
