My wife has a 2016 VW beetle with a 1.8t engine. Currently 108,000 miles I have been changing the oil at 5000 mile intervals with penzoil platinum euro 5w40 since she bought it with 41,000. I recently acquired multiple 1gal jugs of GM dexos 1 gen 3 5w30, The vehicle is no longer under warranty, Not that I'm asking for mechanical issues.. However owners manual states 5w40 or 5w30 may be used under all conditions. Would this oil provide proper protection for my wife's Volkswagen? 🤔

Are GM and Ford engines built that much differently than VW engines to enable them to “get by” with a lower HTHS ? Wear control , deposits control , etc. appear to always favor the Euro oils now where as SP and D1 Gen 3 oils lag behind in those areas . Timing Chain protection LSPI are the exceptions .

Maybe for a short run but I’d be uncomfortable running it for a normal oci.

Anecdotal but I had a gf that ran regular SN conventional in her old Passat from like 2003. The turbo ended up going out and she had to sell it. Not sure of the exact reason as I’m pretty sure the mechanic doing the oil changes diagnosed it and probably wouldn’t admit to an oil related failure. You’re dexos oil is likely much better quality than the $20 bulk conventional oil changes she did but wanted to share anyway

No t does not. It says also you must use oil with appropriate approval.
There is a BIG difference between Dexos 1 Gen3 5W30 and VW 502.00 5W30, the latter one being far more stout (for the lack of better word)
