Mobil 1 was not to blame. It was my fault for leaving the air filter in for three years so the seal got compressed, and Subaru's fault for switching to that asinine clamshell filter holder when they used to use one that had screws at all four corners. Saturn 1.9's used to use four spring clips that maintained even tension.
UOA shows increases in iron, silicon, aluminium, sodium (winter road salt), and a bit of lead. New air filter is now installed. The media of the old one was in good shape, and not clogged, but the seal was not holding up. Slight dirt tracks are visible at one spot on the edge of the filter on the clamshell hinge side. That very small amount of dust was enough to show up a difference on the magnet, and the analysis.
