I'm thinking about mixing a 5w20 and 15w40 in my truck. 1998 Chevy 5.7L 175K. What's everyone opinion on the best brands to mix?

Yea, really n ot much point. 5W-20's are a better oil in general but you can get the same result with a syn blend or even adding a quart of full synthetic to your regular oil (IMHO). I add a quart of RedLine to my oil to get A higher quality base oil and the extra Moly.

I've done a 50/50 of Shell conventional white bottle 5/30 and Rotella 15-40, and a 50/50 of Hav 5-20 and Delo. I like the Delo mix. For your 5.7, I think I would lean toward a 5-30/15-40 at 50/50, or a 10-30/15-40 at 75/25. I can only assume you are trying to thicken things up for the higher mileage? If so, Maxlife may be a good choice. A little thicker, and a stout oil in it's own right.

Why not just buy a properly formulated Xw-30 in the first place? If you look around a little, you should be able to find some. . .

I like a 12 cSt mix of 4 qts Havoline 10W-30 and 2 qts Delo 15W-40.

The Delo adds more moly, calcium & TBN to the standard Havoline 10W-30 add pack, plus some heavier base oil for volatility.

Great blend for summertime temperatures!

hmmmmm Isn't that pretty much the same thing I was planning?

Delo and Havoline sounds like a very "robust" blend to me.

My favorite $2/qt 30 weight oil as of late is a MC 5W-20 / Delo 400 15W-40 mix. Many on this site like to stay "in-house" with the blends, but I don't subscribe to that. I blend for 25%+ synthetic with complimentary basestocks and additive packages. Maybe I am wrong, but the blend seems tough at drain, is smooth as silk in the engine, cleans, and leaves no goblins on the magnetic drain plug.

When blending I try to match a tough synthetic basestock (M1 or MC) with a conventional quiet basestock (Delo). I also try to use similar boron PPM, and get combined zinc PPM>1000. Also the moly in the Delo helps the MC, and the MC dilutes the Diesel-level of detergents, etc. in the Delo down to M1 level. I can find these oils everywhere, and blending is fun when you don't need a full synthetic.

Given the obsessive nature of most of us board participants, I am always surprised when people ask "why would you want to do that?" in response to fairly straightforward blending questions.

I am doing something similar to this for my second car which specs either 5w30 or 10w30.

My main car likes a 40 weight so I tend to have it around. I got a 4 litre jug of Esso XD-3 HDEO 15w40 for the usual stunningly low price. This oil is really too thick for my little car but when I saw a 5 litre jug of Castrol GTX 5w20 on sale for about 40% off I could not resist.

Part of my thinking was based on the idea that the 5w20 oils tend to be high quality, eg that meeting the spec requires a good Group II+ or Group III base oil.

Combine that in a 50/50mix with the high quality and robust additive pack of a good 15w40 HDEO and maybe you end up with a better than average 10w30ish oil.

My expectation is that my blend may be better than most common 10w30s. I doubt that it is worse. And I paid about 30% less for this than garden variety 10w30s like Pennzoil, Valvoline, Quaker State.

And it's fun. Some people like to stockpile 200 quarts of oil. Some of us blend.

Another reason to mix is the situation I'm in -- I found Mobil 1 EP 15-50 at Target for $1.09 a quart. Bought about 16 quarts at all 3 Targets in my town. That price was just too good to ignore! So I'm reading all threads, such as this one, to get ideas on mixing it down for my 97 Avalon with 116k....

4 quarts Chevron Supreme 10W-30 (@$0.49 per after rebate) + 4 quarts Delo 15W-40 (1 gal @ $5.99) in my '73 450SE year-round seems to be the best of both worlds in that it barely costs more than the filter! I can change out the oil whenever I feel the urge for $9

regardless of the miles.

A pretty good mix, IMHO, for less than 1/5th the cost of what I put in the '91: 2 gallons AME.

Cheers!
