Hi everyone. What is your opinion between those two two motor oils? I have honda civic lx 00' with 245k using 10w-40 maxlife write now.but thinking to switch to 5w-40 for a better oil flow? Any answer\opinion is welcome.thanks...

Dino 10W-40 is not a particularly good oil because it has a ton of viscosity modifiers (polymers), which might lead to sludge when they deteriorate in certain engines. Dino 15w40 and synthetic 5W-40 are better choices.

Since you live in LA, cold flow is not important. 5W-40 has similar fuel economy / friction characteristics to 10W-40 (similar HTHS viscosity). 15w40 has more friction and less fuel economy (more HTHS viscosity) but a little bit better wear protection in highly demanding conditions.

Why do you want to use xW-40? Do you have high oil consumption? xW-30 should also be OK for your car otherwise. But, yes, xW-40 would cut the oil consumption if that is a problem. It was the case for me until I repaired my valve-stem oil seals -- then the oil consumption went to zero.

If you're looking for good flow, many 15w40 HDEOs are known for flowing more like a 10w-40 in the cold. As already noted, you really don't have to worry about really cold temps, so you don't need a super thin oil anyhow. There are some great options in the 5w-40 flavor, but so far they are all synthetic, which is a waste of money IMO on a motor with as many miles as you have. HDEOs are also good at cleaning and keeping your motor clean. A good 15w40 would serve you well if you are wanting to continue using a 40 grade oil.

I think both you and the car would be happier with 10W30. 10W30 would have less burn off than 5W30 and would be my choice for warm weather in an older engine.

I dont see any downside to switching to a 5W40. Yes, it will have better cold/cool oil flow. The synthetic 5W40s seem to provide one of the highest levels of protection available also.

It would be a good choice.
