5W-30 for everything?

I switched to 5w30 in everything Daughters Hyundai Santa Fe wife's Toyota 4Runner and My Tundra they call for 0w20 and 5w20.
I lived on 5w30 for years and went tons of miles we never heard of engine failures years ago like we do now.

Which time period specifically were engine failures completely unheard of?

0W30 or 5W30 ESP would be my choice for your applications.
