No. A 5w-30 is a 5 grade oil. Let that percolate. It has viscosity improvers to make it act, as a 30, when hot. It's like peanut butter and roofing nails compared to SAE 30w. SAE 30w has a much higher film strength.

Read your mower engine manual on oil. If it says run olive oil then that's what you use.

Maybe you should read just about any manual on oil, bud. A 5w30 is not a 5 grade oil. It’s a 30 grade oil that passes cold flow tests deemed “5w” which means it has to pass specific CCS and MRV testing at -35*C.

We were talking about 5w-30. THAT is a 5 grade thin oil with viscosity index improvers by the car load to make it a 30 at 212F or 100C. That is all fella.

1. 5w-30 is a multi-grade oil. We all agree?
2. "Typically made" with a base oil and additives. Still with us? To modify it's properties, (pause) "specifically it's viscosity" at certain temps.

Don't shoot the messenger.
 
When it comes to common API oils, the 5W-30 version of a particular oil series is almost always superior to the 10W-30 version. The same applies to 5W-40 vs 15W-40 and 5W-50 vs 20W-50. The narrower multi-grades can be made with cheaper, lower quality base oils and still meet the spec. The major brands exploit this to increase profit margins. You're getting less for the same money. A 5W-30 or 5W-40 forces them to use better quality base oils and VII to meet the wider spread.

This does not apply to certain boutique brands that formulate to a performance point instead of a price point such as HPL, Amsoil, Driven, and Red Line. You're going to get top shelf quality from them no matter the grade.

Would be great. I use it in all my summer OPE.
Just dumped some ST Full Syn 15w40 in a 17.5hp single cylinder B&S and the rod knock is slightly quieter. Old oil had loads of glitter for an hour and a half in the sump. May need an engine change before the oil is used up unfortunately

I have a jug of the full-synthetic SuperTech 15w-40 on deck once I finish my T5 supply. VOA on it appeared to be quite good for the price point.

Yeah, heavier oil will help dampen the knock to a point but will need a rebuild if you intend to keep it long term.

Based on your statement, an oil will thicken when hot. This is simply not true.

If it blows it blows, lining up a replacement engine isn’t that difficult
