5W-20 or 0W-20

I am hoping that just like last year AAP will be running a Mobil sale the last week of December. I am also hoping that they avoid the current trend of using MIR.

I have a 3.8 Dodge Caravan and a 4.0 Lexus GS400. The van goes about 8000 miles a year and the car about 7000. The car is the daily driver and travels 6.5 miles to work M-F. The van currently has EP 5W-20 and the Lexus recommends 5w30. Lexus in Canada allows for a 5W-20 in that engine but not Toyota's 0W-20. I am assuming that it is too thin plus the fact that it shears rather quickly making it even thinner. I am leaning towards running Mobil 0W-20 in both vehicles instead of EP 5W-20. Spec wise both oils seem very similar if my main goal is MPG and less start-up wear. Tell me why I should lean one way or the other.

The Mobil 1 0w20 is working very well for me in the Fords. At 10K, the oil still looks good. The engine is as quite at the end of the oil run as at the beginning.

The 5W-20 and 0W-20 line gets blurred more and more.

Id choose "0W-20" and it could be a Castrol Edge, M1 isnt the only manufacturer of 0W-20 nor 5W-20. I need to point that out sometimes.

Tig, have you noticed any MPG gains going from a synthetic 5W-20 to a 0W-20?

45ACP, I know that Toyita's 0W-20 is too thin for my application and that Mobil's oilis more a medium 0W-20. Where does the Edge fall---medium or heavy?

Small changes in MPG are hard to determine. With that said, the best MPG I ever got with the Fusion(I have made this trip 7 times) was 33.6 on 0-20.

Capa, Edge is on the light side. But its more shear-stable than Toyota 0W-20.

I can see the forest for the trees now. High VI? yay, good.. but the Toyota 0W-20 seems to have a fatal flaw! yet, CATERHAM likes this oil.

Im also glad that the oils Dr Haas speaks of are 0W-20 INO (In name Only) and their HTHS makes them 30-weights, which means its not actually xW-20 at all.

Analysis is needed, wisdom is needed to be applied, and even a non-Mobil oil will yield great results.

As to 0W-20 vs 5W-20.. I have purchased Supertech (an XOM product, just not M1 lolol) die to cost constraints, and that oil is a very very good one. its also not synthetic. nd that does not matter. Its a great oil, for engines that spec 5W-20.[/b]

If you're referring to Castrol EDGE 0W20 compare their SM Gold bottle to their SN 0W20 Gold bottle. The SM was a much better product IMO, and the opinions of many others here. Once my SM stash is gone I'll be using another oil, unless Castrol tweaks the SN formula.

What's become very apparent, are 45ACP's ridiculous
statements founded in cow pop that the Toyota 0W20
oil shears to a 10W with no factual support whatsoever...that is his fatal flaw !

Tone it down there, CMM. If you want the "no factual support whatsoever" prize, its with other oils and posters ******. Anyways. its in the other thread, they were talking about how its not recommended 0W-20 but rather 5W-20 because it does that.

Im not the one that said it but it sounds totally credible.

I'd rather that this thread stay on topic. I would appreciate any and all comments on the actual subject.

Perhaps someone can open a separate thread on Toyota's 0W-20, which the manufacturer doesn't allow for my Lexus V8 even though it allows its 5W-20. While the Toyita oil is certainly good WITH certain applications it is not the best as some would have us believe.

Sorry to tell you but the MIR is here to stay. Pretty much all of the oil vendors at all of the parts store participate in this program. Walmart is the exception. I personally hate MIR's if I were king my first action would be to ban them.

Our corporate office has had lots of negative feedback from store team members and customers about MIR's but the oil vendors pretty much dictate the program. We try to alleviate the situation by printing a special extra receipt for the rebate and attach it to the rebate form. It's pretty easy to fill out the form and mail it. The oil companies are pretty good about sending the rebates, we have zero problems with the process.

Even without the rebate, the oil is still cheaper than regular.
We also changed the way additional quarts were sold. Lots of vehicles require more than 5 quarts. In the past, additional quarts were billed at full retail, we now bill additional quarts at a discounted price IF they are purchased at the same time.

Thanks for the heads up! Do you work for AAP? I also REALLY hate MIR. I've had bad experiences with them, but with electronics. Last year the deal was something like $32 for 5 quarts and a Mobil filter and $3 extra if you want the EP version. If there is an MIR I'll have to make a decision since I can get EP at Wal-mart for around $29 and a P1 filter for close to $5.

Maybe its not, but little on this site is irrefutable and is more speculative conjecture based on hand-picked oil attributes.

That said, aside from some people's M1 exclusive advice which isnt all bad all the time but is repetitive, there is a lot of good about this resource of motor oil opinions. And not everyone is sold on the thinner oil idea.

I dont buy an oil if it has a rebate attached, and if it does i usually ignore it.
