I own a 1988 Ford Escort with 506K+ miles still running on the original 1.9L engine (never rebuilt) and 4 speed manual transmission. It currently uses a quart of oil about every 1000-1200 miles. This just goes to show you that with proper maintenance a car will last for many miles/years. I've been using 10w40 conventional oil in it most of it's life, with oil change intervals probably averaging 4-5K miles and currently I'm using Lube Control LC-20 and letting the oil change interval go for their recommended oil change interval of 10K miles. I've been doing this for the last 31K miles and so far haven't seen any negative effects, such as increased oil consumption from the long OCI. Just in the past few days I've found out that some of the members over at www.cleanmpg.com have been contacting Ford Motor Company about this car trying to persuade them to give me a new Ford Fiesta for it. I would also appreciate anyones help on this forum in contacting Ford. Maybe if they receive lots of comments on this car it will get their curiosity up. I think it would be good advertising for Ford, plus good for customer relations.

I highly doubt Ford will give you a new vehicle for it, but it's still a cool feat. You say it consumes a quart every 100-1200 miles, do you mean 1000-1200 miles? Any pics? I just did an oil change on an Escort yesterday, but it's 10 years newer

FordMan59, when you get 1.2 Million miles on that Escort let me know and I will write Ford.

Oh, second thought last time I wrote Ford and asked them to stand behind the Explorer thay sold me all I got from them was the finger!

I don't understand why you would want a free car. If I put 500k on my vehicle, it's because I love the car and want to see how far I can take it.

Now if cash is tight and you need a new vehicle, then that's an alternative motive for wanting the Fiesta and not b/c your car achieved something by reaching 500k miles. If that's the case, then it would be cool for Ford to do something to help you out (give you an incentives or credits towards a new Ford, etc) and then use it as promotional material and advertising ...assuming they want to start such an advertising campaign.

But lets not forget that Ford is a business, and the automotive business is not exactly doing stellar right now. If they started giving out free cars to everyone who claims to have 500k miles on an old car, people would be coming out of the wood work to claim their free car. Also, it's not in a company's best interest to come out and say "Wow, we never thought our product would last this long!" which is kinda what giving away a new car would be doing.

500k miles is a lot of miles on a vehicle, but it's not like days passed where an engine was toast by 100k, and 200k was almost impossible to achieve. Advances in technology makes 100k miles the norm, 200k miles easily attainable. Many people would have 200k miles on their car if they didn't wreck it, or decide to get a new car.

Please understand I don't mean anything written here in an insulting way. I just don't believe 500k miles on a vehicle is an accomplishment worthy of a free car. I actually hope Ford does something for you, free car or otherwise. But personally I think it's in Ford's best interest to do something like ask you to bring your vehicle in, have a team of top Ford engineer's and mechanics give it a thorough once over to be preventive and address any issues before they become a problem, and then send you on your way with a better chance of getting another 500k miles on it

o.k. i think this ia a question for mr. obvious

I think if anything you should pay Ford. You got more than your money's worth from that car. It must have been a good vehicle to last that long, and you got more use out of it than most other owners.

How could it be verified that the odometer rolled over 5 times? Although you probably would have to do a lot of highway driving to get that many miles in 22 years, I'm still sceptical.

I had an '87 Escort and that was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned. You would've had to put so many timing belts and waerpumps not to mention lots of other problem parts. There's too many opportunites for the engine to have overheated. How anyone could bare to constantly work on and maintain and drive a rough 80's Escort is beyond me.

I'd buy that the bottom end is original, but there is no way the head has never been off.
